I’m working on a custom intake manifold for my flathead. The main body that sits on top of the carb is made out of sheet metal. To the top, I’ll be attaching 3 WWII howitzer canon shells, that I’ll setup like bug catcher intake. What is the best method for attaching dissimilar metals?

MIG Welding?
Brazing?
Soldering?

I could use tips on the method that would work best.

Thanks,

Sid

Normally the dissimilar metals thing is a hard one to get around. But luckily brass brazes to sheet metal very well. Just use an acyteline torch with a small tip and I use brass rod and flux, but you could use pre-fluxed rod as well.

Brass or Bronze filler rods would be my choice.
Oxy-Acetylene or TIG.

Make sure you clean off ALL the flux when you are finished.

Goose-em,

I did end up silver soldering the brass shells to my sheet metal intake box. It worked out OK. I'm trying to keep the tarnished patina of the shells but cleaned off the area to solder very well beforehand. It's not perfect but I did it.

Here's the intake so far.

Yes, it's the air intake. I'll either add butterfly valves or maybe something that looks like a shell and cutout the underside for air flow.
