Those were strong bikes back in the day.
Don't have any info to offer but I would probably leave the rear suspension the way it was.
Just my opinion.
Post up some pics if you can....might be surprised and get some good ideas and advice for the project itself.

If you're still interested, www.thehorsemag.com has an article it the "article" section complete w/pics. If you can weld, it's not too tough. I've built several.

There's a guy over at Slicks Choppers that builds hardtail sections, I cut my first one right behind the neck and built a whole new frame.
