I have read on antique motorcycle forums that they use oil of wintergreen and alcohol to restore old rubber items.
The alcohol opens up the rubber so that the oil can get in.
Apparently they use it on impossible to replace spark plug boots and stuff like that.
I have a really cool military gas can spout that has a expandable rubber plug.
But it is hard as a rock.
That oil is also used as a horse liniment for sore muscles.
I am going to get some and try it out.
I will keep you posted as to it's efficacy.

It might take a long time before you see the possible effects of the oil on the rubber. It might later turn the surface all sticky, or possibly cause it to crack.

From what I have read it works fine.
And those guys are doing it to parts that nowhere on earth can they buy a replacement.

As far as it goes for me.
If it works I have a thing I can use.
If not I throw it away.
The stakes are not nearly as high.

No but
Every single thing I own has an overpowering minty fresh stench!

That's the way my car smelled after I cleaned the interior with Simple Green. Smells much better than that old, stale smell a old car gets when it's shut up for a long time.

I'm curious on the results of the wintergreen oil, too. I have some windo rubbers that are hard, I'd love to be able to soak them with something and get them soft and pliable again since they are hard to find and expensive when you do, not to mention a PITA to replace....
