started replacing the rusted out floor pan and got the gas tank mount welded in yesterday. we stuck the mock up motor & tranny in to see where the firewall and floor pan needed modified. the mock up running gear fit better than l thought it would considering all the changes that have been made to the body. lots of measuring before cuttiing out the 7" from the back doors and roof put the firewall 2 1/2" from the back of the motor leaving room for the HEI distribtor.

today starts floor pan install and figuring out exhaust placement.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

we started working on the floor pan and firewall. the oringal floor was to rusted out and unsafe to use. so 99% of the floor was cut out. to replace the floor pan l am using a method that worked good on my race cars. we are building a cage out of square tubing that runs from side to side and front to back out of 2" in the rear and 1 1/2" in the front so the metal floor sits on top of the floor cage . the floor pan will then be attached to the floor cage by welding. this makes a stronger floor pan than the oringal. the floor cage then will be attached to the chassis by bolts.

the fire wall will then be fabbed to the foor pan and welded together creating a one piece firewall to floorpan with no seams. many holes will have to be filled in and the redrilled in the places to run hoses, steering and other things thru.

post updates on progress soon,

wheel wells

We started removing the old rusty wheel inner fender wells in the rear to get ready to put in small tubs. because of the narrowed ford 9" rearend, a mild 3" inset on the rear inner panels is required to clear the tires. the out side panels will be raised and leved to the frame for suspension travel.

car still looks rough but progress is moving at a decent pace.

behind a little bit. By now l was hoping frame/chassis was powder coated and re-assembled so the hard lines and wiring was underway.

post more progress as soon as it happens.

Hey! What was the final outcome on the side panels? Did you get them to look the way you want? Not sure I understood exactly what was wrong there.

Hey! What was the final outcome on the side panels? Did you get them to look the way you want? Not sure I understood exactly what was wrong there.

when we did the panels it was the first time l tried any thing like that on a car. leaving the post between the window panels we welded in made the car look like a hack job. [looked like a half donkeyed atttempt] so, were cutting out the post and re-doing the panels so they will be one flowing panel instead of two put in where the rear windows were. that will clean up the sides and FLOW, instead of having middle post sticking out like a sore thumb[ddev

if you look at the picture first pic out side you can see the post between the window panels. on the second pic you can see where we started cutting out the post . will get good pics and update when that mess is cleaned up and rewelded in correctly [dr

wheel wells/tubbed

today's stuff.

started re-doing the rear inner fender wells to make mini tubs for rear tire clearance.

we used a old single axle trailer fender cut in half down the middle. worked great and when sound deadening and carpet is installed, ya'll never know what was put in to tub it [cl

I get ya on the side panels - I agree, it'll look way better as one solid panel. And it'll give you a good canvas for a 70's style mural. j/k!! I think I'm going to steal that trailer fender idea - I've been trying to figure out how to redo my wells.

your'e welcome to any ideas l come up with. l'm happy to make a fellow rodders life easier[dr

look on craigslist for used fenders or a old trailer for sale cheap or free, that's how l got my yard trailer. it was free and since l did not need the fenders we used them on the panel build.

MURAL; not sure yet what to put in the panel for a picture or some thing like;

seats

worked more on the bracing for the floor pan today.

figured out where to make the seat mounts and placement so steering wheel and pedals make a driving comfortable. the back seat will fit perfect between the rear fenderwells.

the firewall is starting to be mocked up tonight. hope to have the firewall and floor pans done soon.

firewall

about an hour ago started welding in the front part of the firewall. when finished l'm going to take a sheet of 1/8'' aluminum and machine screws, space out the screws along the edges. that way it covers all the holes in the firewall and the ugly splice. then when the cover is screwed in place, we will take proper size hole saw and cut out for heater hoses, master cyclinder and other stuff. that way nice and clean looking when finished[ddev

stuff

thanks gregster, little by little it's gettin' there[;)

Later on when the floor pan welding is finished, the floors get por 15 or rust mort, then whole passenger compartment gets painted. before installing carpet and intiorer, rolled silver heat shield and the grey undercarpet insulation to keep heat off my feet. by doing all this, it should prevent rust from returning. the underside of the body will be under coated to help sound deaden and protect it.

l plan doing the side panels, around the rear window, edges of the roof and the doors with dynamat or the lowe's brand stuff to help the sound deading.
l have a feeling it will still kinda noisy inside due to the open roof.

Glad you are redoing the side panels. Didn't like it with the post in. It will be much cleaner now, like a real sedan delivery. No one will be able to figure out what it really is. 4 door? no way! Great build, great idea and worksmanship. Keep the pictures coming.
