I was going through the scrap pile the other day and found the old crusty tailgate off the Dodge/Fargo and decided to build a bench out of it instead of sending it to the scrap yard.

Used 2"100 wall tubing for the frame and a leaf spring from the C10 for the arm rests. I have some shiplap barnwood for the seat and a weathered 2x8 I'm going to mount recessed under the front of the seat with an old license plate let in in the center.

Environmentalist!

Great recycling job here. We should all be proud of our contributions to saving the planet.

PS. I'd park my @$$ on that bench any day. [cl

Koooool bench Dozer!!! In my latest Spring cleaning fit I found an old Dodge tailgate & am planning on something similar! Can't wait to see the finshed product!!! [dr

All I have left is to clean it all up add some patina to the bare steel and add a clear coat. Making the recess for the license plate made a bigger dust mess in the shop than the Fargo :(

I have a F-1 tailgate up in the rafters. May have to break out the welder.:D
Wood dust is worse then dry wall dust........ Just ask my wife. LOL

Finished, couple coats of 60/40 Spar varnish/mineral spirits on the wood and a light coat of clear on the steel after two applications of rust patina.

It's really comfortable to sit in.

Rust patina? in a can? and did you treat the springs before
you welded them? Just curious...ha I really like it....[cl[cl

Thanks

Patina was a mixture of hydrogen peroxide vinegar and salt in a spray bottle. Spray all the steel down, then I use my torch to warm the steel, then spray again and it instantly starts to fizz and bubble creating a rusty patina.

Not sure what you mean by treating the springs before?

I'd imagine fbp meant heat treating of some sort, so the spring doesn't snap off at the weld.

Someday, I'll make it down to your compound and we'll give it a beer-fueled "stress test". [ddd

That would be cool, I haven't been up to Regina for a while and it's usually there at 7 am and on my way back with a load of tanks by 8
