Removing the E-brake cable housing out of the backing plate can be annoying. Here's what I learned. Slide an appropiately sized box end wrench over the end of the housing and wiggle it on right up to the backing plate [the wiggling helps break out the rust buildup under the flared tangs]. The wrench should be a tight enough fit that it squashes all of the tangs inward. Your wrench will probably be a 12 or a 6 point box-end and the E-brake cable will have three tangs so they all should be pressed down together. The housing will just pop out of it's hole and you will be laughing all the way to the bank. Sorry I didn't take the pictures of a dirty, rusty, yuccy cable.:p Keep on tinkering.
