That rear has been dry a while, reckon they drove it that way?[S

I don't think it was ever driven. I did a little cleaning on the ring gear
and I think the gears will run OK. May just take it apart and throw some
bearing and seals in it. If I do rebuild it I'll step up the gear ratio and
replace the carrier to get rid of the open center.
 
It doesn't look like they drove it that way, no lubrication would tear the gears up pretty quick at road speeds I think.

Pops, I was scratching my head at the 2.56 ratio, but it turns out it was a Camaro gear ratio. Too bad about its condition, 2.56 would have given some awesomely low highway RPM's. Maybe you plan on changing the diff too though?

Yeah it was out of a 85? Camaro. A little bit on the high speed side.
Easy enough to change tho.
 
Way back when, I tried to get better gas mileage out of a hot road camaro. I swapped to a 2.56 geared rear end. It would run a 14.70 sec/98 mph quarter and still be in second gear. Top end was stupid fast. Sometimes I wonder why I'm still around....

Sometimes it's just plain scary to think about some of the things we did
back when. My stupid days were spent running blown big block Chevys
in jet boats . Nearly cost me a marriage. Now 40 years later I'd still
do it again.
 
Don't let it get you down, Pops. A rear end isn't that much money. If you have a couple hundred more in the truck when it's done it isn't a big deal.

I tell my bride that's what everything will cost when she asks.
It's not much unless you start adding them up, which I refuse to do.
I don't want to know.
 
Are the pics of the engine and rear from the old dodge? or from the donor dodge?

The pics are of the old '47 Dodge.
The 1999 donor is the one with the 5.9 magnum.
I just hope I'm smart enough to do the engine swap with
all the fuel injection stuff and the electronics. We will see.
If all else fails I can always go with a carb and distributer.

Anything new with your old Dodge?
 
I'm glad to see that the forum member you bought it from is making sure you're happy and willing to make it right. I don't think the dry rear is a huge deal, but it's nice to see someone stand behind what they sold and willing to go the extra mile. It makes me even happier to be a member of this forum.
 
I didn't know this guy at all when I drove to Oklahoma to buy
this Dodge sight unseen. He treated me right and told me what
he knew about it and I was and still am comfortable with the
deal we made. Homer is a stand up Christian guy and I'm glad
our paths crossed.
There needs to be more people like him in this old world.

Been stripping the donor the last couple of days.
Just about ready to pull the cab off it.
I've never seen a cab cracked up like this thing is.
I think it was made out of Prince Albert cans.
It has had a rough life feeding cattle in the Texas Panhandle.

They used a donor that looks a lot like yours for a build they did but used the entire frame.

No reruns here. I'm just after the engine with the fuel injection and the transmission.
I have no idea on where to start with the computer control module. A whole boat load of wires and sensors. I bet it only takes a few wires to make the engine run but it's a matter of figuring out which ones.
