i'm thinking about building a steel frame and using 3/4" finished plywood as was suggested. I could go all steel too though....might actually be beneficial to go that route in this case.

Is it a work truck or a toy?

If you are gonna throw crap on the back and occasionally use it as a work bench....go with steel.

I've built a few flatbeds and what I think most guys miss is sheet metal behind the wheel it hides all the springs and gas tank etc. cleans up the whole thing and easy to do.
the pictures are old but get the idea.

My old Dodge looked pretty neat, I thought?

2" square tube frame with tongue and groove hardwood flooring.
Curved the front to match the cab and used some rolled boat trailer fenders to match the cab a little.

I have a tonne of photos of it being built if you're interested.
