Kent White did a couple articles in the Sept/ Oct. and Nov/Dec issues of The Home Shop Machinist - "17 reasons to Love the Oxy-Acetylene Torch".
Great articles.

If you use your oxy-acet torch very much you really should consider a gas saver. It shuts of both the ox and acet when you puch the lever down by hanging the torch on it. To light just pick up the torch and wave it in front of the pilot light.

Blacksmiths mount their gas savers on a stand and call it a Treadle Torch. You can hang the torch on the hook in front of the pilot, and add a wieght to hold the valve bar down. Step on the pedal at the bottom the torch lights -hands free. good for working on small parts.

The Gas Saver I have is made by Weldit and costs about $140 at MCS or Enco. There are less expensive ones.

The vertical part of the stand is 1" box tube. The actuator bar (inside the 1" box ) is 1/2 EMT conduit with a large washer welded on top. The rest is probably self-explanatory form the photos.

(I'm not sure why there are no thumbnails, help?)
