ok, so heres the deal,

i'm cruising along minding my own business and now I have the opportunity to buy two 62 volvo 544's for $500 each and the guy will trailer them to my house. They are bill of sale only, hes had them for years and was saving them for a hot rod project but never got around to it. both cars have some rust but are complete and were parked about 4 years ago. both need new interiors.

What do you guys think? I have two slots left in my backyard but that will bring the total to six cars. I plan to get rid of one of my other cars anyways.
this is what i'm thinking:
1.Build one into a fenderless balls out rat rod
2.Build one into a more refined cruiser with a modern volvo engine (what my wife wants to do)
3. Keep the third for parts

let me have it

I say if you get them, you might want to build the "Bosses" car first. You know, just to keep her happy.

I also say "GO FOR IT"

thats part of my anxiety, however, i don't think it will be a big deal. The biggest hurdle for me is not having my own trailer to trailer the car over to the chp office in town. Ca is pretty lenient when it comes to this stuff from what i've talked about with others. The hardest part is getting the vin verified but all they are doing is making sure that the car is what you say it is.

I may just get one to build for my wife and see if he will store the other for a bit.

Well, as someone who owned 5 Corvairs at one time  , I am hardly the one to give advice. But, I would find out about that title thing first, because my understanding is that California can be tough at times. At least take the vin numbers to the DMV and see if someone still owns them or what.

I understand your sickness for bringing home every stray car you can get your hands on..........most of us on this forum are infected just like you. :D

Hey Joe, are you ever gonna build one of those things or are you just gonna hoard them all and tell people they are not for sale because you are fix em up someday. :D .

Just kidding ya. I would get them because it's a good deal and you will certainly be able to do something with them someday. I like your idea of different build styles for each.

Ok based on what he seems to be saying if he was driving them up to 4 years ago and owned them...simply lost the titles it will be a simple thing for HIM to get duplicate titles for the cars. I'd even offer to give him a bit extra to do that (say if you give him $50 extra it will probably still be cheaper for you in the long run). At least here in AZ, a duplicate title itself only cost $4.

If he hems and haws about it I would try to have the vins run to make sure he is in fact (at least to DMV) the owner of the cars.

Yeah Mike, it was true. They just sort of multilpied. I bought the first one for $200, because I needed a work car quickly one time. Then I saw one sitting, paid like $ 25 for it. Was sitting at a VFW dinner one night and a guy says "I hear you like Corvairs?" He had a Spider convertible that had bad oil tube seals (they ALL had bad oil tube seals :D ) when he would stop at a light the smoke would enter the cockpit and he had asthma, so he couldn't stand to drive it. I rebuilt the engine and drove it daily for about 3 years. I paid $25 for it, and bought a couple more for about that amount each.

I just kept them all in the backyard and when I needed parts I would rob Peter to pay Paul. Had my own little junkyard there. The neighbors must have loved me.

During the gas crunch, I installed a second Corvair gas tank into the convert, so it held like 32 gallons or something like that. I could run forever on that. :D

Well as long as we're confessing at one point I had 5 Mustang IIs stuffed around here......but I'm much better now (I'm down to 2) :D

Any California Peace Officer can verify the vin. However, in this day and age, finding an officer that knows what to look for is a problem. Most, nowadays, grew up in the Honda Civic generation. LOL

Cobra!

Mike,
The II's came out around the time of the gas crunch, I was living in Austin, Tx. I have always loved 'Stangs & when the Mustang II Cobra came out I test drove a Black one with gold racing stripes. It was a beautiful car but as we were driving around... I swear you could actually watch the gas gauge move down. Needless to say... I bought a LUV truck instead! This was in '76... my daughter on the left & her friend! ; - >

I say buy em. Just think how rare they are going to be when you own all of the ones that are left in the world.

this is the wrong place to ask for mental health help, it's like walking into an AA meeting with a cold six-pack and saying "someone want to talk me outta drinking these?" :p

He seemed like a pretty cool guy actually and i think the duplicate title idea is a good one, I'll talk to him some more sunday as we are going out of town tomorrow. He also mentioned that he has a lotus super seven that was built in 1982 sitting in his barn that he wants to get rid of. I googled it and it looks pretty cool, i'll have to check that out too. Then I'll just have to start stacking cars in my front yard (just kidding, i will never let that happen, i'm not that demented.)

Alright Gas and Bone, I know it seems like all i do is hoard stuff but I do plan to actually do something with them.....eventually..... :D

I got back from Korea in early 74......the world had sure changed in the year that I was over there. The one thing about being a hotrodder back then was even though the factory preformance and styling was in the dumper there were a lot of lightweight bodys around to stuff V8s into (my V8 Pinto and Vega phase )

To slightly change a line from the movie JAWS......"we're going to need a bigger yard"
