When I'm raising my shop door by pulling down on the chain on a roll up door, the 'going up' chain sometimes snakes around until it gets caught in the chain latch and 'bang' everything stops except the cursing. Maybe you have experienced this too. I cut the handle off of an plastic oil jug and screwed it onto the wall so it covers the latch, but is easily bent away when you want to latch the chain to hold the door.

Our latch like that is mounted on the concrete wall instead of the door jam so it somehow clears and never snags when going up or down. When we release the chain from the latch it is several inches away from catching. But I also put the door up and down slowly instead of letting it rip.

Good solution though you have come up with if you have that problem.
