trying to find out the best way to put a older shell on a newer floor pan/chassis.

You need to give us a few more details for us to help out.
What year and make car or is it your user name?
What condition is the current floor pan?
What chassis are you thinking of using?
What is wrong with the original chassis if anything?
Do you want to use a newer chassis and it's companion floor pan or make your own floor pan to fit a newer chassis and the older body?
You may not have to "Channel" the car body unless you want to. Then chassis width may become a real issue.
Oh and post up some pics if you can.
