did gm ever have any decent five speeds that bolt right up to the small block chevy? I want to go five speed, four with an overdrive. anything i can yank at the junkyard? thanks guys!

Camaros and corvettes had 5 and 6 speed trans. I believe they used a hydralic throwout bearing. They could handle the stock horsepower ratings. I used a Richmond 6 spd because; (A) 500hp big block (B) manual clutch (c) highest torque rating at the time.

I would never do that again. Difficult to shift, cost $3k, too big (had to modify trans tunnel extensively)

You can get aftermarket T-56, T-500, T-600 or a Tremec (the 500 and 600 is torque rating)

Gassergarage,
I thought when the 6 speed came out is when GM went to the 2nd generation SBC....Just askin....0r did the 2nd gen SBC have the same bolt pattern?

thats what i was thinking, i see lots of dead 80's camaros at the boneyard, do you think one of those 5 speeds would hold up to a properly built 327? I'm not planning a rebuild at this point so all i'm really shooting for is about 300hp.

I believe the bolt pattern was the same, but I'm not sure. Lost interest when the 2nd generation came out. I'm a computer idiot. Die heart old school (It's easier)

For a cruiser or daily driver, it shouldn't be a problem. Banzai starts with sticky shoes would be a problem.

OK,
Thanks for bringing me up to speed on that. It amazes how quick you forget something when you are not working with it everyday.....

57 chevy pickup

I run a chevy 4.3 V6 with the stock 5 speed
Its got a 60 overbore with forged pistons
Crane roller cam with roller lifters
Holley tbi
With a 200hp shot of NOS
was raced last year in the high 10s
Has a posi with slicks
The stock trans holds to gether good its the rearends that they had trouble with
I just bought this truck and have not raced it
I'm going to put a 9 inch ford rear in it frist

couple things about the S10 5 speed, you have to cut 3/4" or 1" ( cant remember what it is) off the mainshaft where it goes into the pilot bushing and you have to find the right disk for the spline on on the input shaft, other than that it will bolt up to old bellhousings and you can use the throwout bearing for your old stuff also, gotta love Chevy for some simple things, I have an S10 5 speed waiting for something to put it in behind my 40K original mile 250 inliner.

sweet, i'll have to write that little tidbit down in my build book so I don't say "what the?" later on, cause it's all bolt up in my head :D.
