What engine trans combo would you say to be the best on fuel mileage. for the sake of argument, lets say it's going in a basically stock mid 50s pickup body, and it's got to be a V8 and automatic.

Anything except a 350 Chevy.....love em, but they're the worse for good mileage, I know I've had quite a few!. I would have to go with a Ford 302 and any type of Overdrive trans...CR (This should get real interesting WB!)

I used to get about 19-20 on the highway in my '57 Chevy with a 327 and 4 speed until I went from a Q-jet to an Edelbrock. I get about 16 now. An overdrive trans and good gears should get about anything decent mileage, regardless of brand.

Assume optimal gearing, I'm not looking for a discussion on gear ratios. I'm just looking to discuss engine/tranny combos here. The cruising rpms would be worth mentioning tho. Personally I have had the best mileage from 283s and 289s but mostly stickshifts.

The carbed 350 with 4 spd in my 70 C-10 does better then the tbi 350 with a 5 spd in my 94 GMC did. Alot of factors dictate mileage more than just what type of engine.

350 sbc 700R4 w/ 3:42 gears in an S10 blazer knocked down 17.5 mpg's. TPI 350 in a vette 700R4 w/ 3:08's knocked down 23mpg. 5.3L vortec with a T70 turbo, 4L80E and 3:23's in an 89 C1500 made 12 mpg @680 crank hp. My 325hp 396 th400 3:90 geared chevelle is 8-10 mpg at best. [P

307 sbc w/ a 700r4. Stock aluminum intake with a late model non electronic Quadrajet with a summit R/V cam. I got 20-25mpg all day long in my old 60 Biscayne w/3:55 gears. OD+long stroke motor=torque=good mpg. Had great power too...I miss that car...305 should do the same, but I think the 307 is way better.

fuel mileage

:cool:Really depends on what kind of truck its going in too. If you want mileage Chevy  307 0r 305 with t-5 tranny Ford 260 or 289 with t-10 tranny Mopar 318 with A833 -4speed overdrive.

I'm just wondering why we are talking about gas mileage with are toys. To me its about horse power.

If you like driving to long distances, it matters. I would have loved to have driven my flatbed to Bonneville last summer, but I couldn't afford to do it. I drove my Toyota there for 1/3 - 1/2 the cost.

The 41 dodge truck is going to get a sensible drivetrain....and air conditioning.

My 3500lb AD pickup with a tired, flat cammed 305 with a Rochester 2 bbl carb and Turbo 350 got 18 MPG. I rebuilt the engine with an RV cam, SP2P manifold and Edelbrock 500 cfm carb and the best I've gotten is 16.
