Heres a quick little tool. I was pulling this rear apart to get the drive shaft out for a set of original style lakester headers. drove the pin out but the pinion shaft didnt want to give up the connentor. so to the the shop and found a piece of 3/8 plate drilled a 1 1/2 hole then took a grinder with a cut-off wheel to open to the side. Then two 1/2 inch holes 1 7/8 from center.
2 pieces of 1/2 inch rod and some nuts. I used some of my hold down pieces from my mill but I think you'll get the drift. Hope this helps out.

So simple, so effective. That's really cool, thanks for sharing.

On the "original style" lake headers, do you use the actual inside drive shaft part or the outside cover part?
