Fuel additives to take the place of lead in unleaded gas are primarily to lube and protect the non-hardened valve seats in old engines intended to use leaded gas, hope this helped answer the question.:)
 
the lead 'gas or additive' lube and also helps seal some things like valves a friend had a older motorhome it was very hard to start ran ok added lead starts GREAT runns very good :p
 
Marvel Mystery oil works well too.Pint per tank full. Used to use it in the stock car.Great upper cyl lube.You can even put it in the oil for lifter clatter.
