I do pay taxes. I make enough money to have to do that. Liability is taken care of because of the no customer policy. When i sell cars they are on ebay which its stated in my auctions that it is sold as is where is no warranty is implied or expressed and Sinners hot rods or myself holds no liability to the owning, operating, or shipping of this vehicle. It protects me from the guys who like to do burn out doughnuts in parking lots and smack poles and attempt to come back to the builder..
Hell you can mow grass and make enough $$ to have to pay taxes, doesnt mean you have to start a professional lawn service.
I have an accountant and track receipts and such. She keeps me legit

My Indiana bill of sale also states that the purchaser has inspected the car and the vehicle is satisfactory and signed by both parties before shipment has taken place and i encourage inspections and do driving videos to show they are road ready.

When i picked up my accountant she drew up all these forms and encouraged me to list these disclaimers in my auctions to protect myself. Best thing i could have done was work with her.. We have built less than 5 cars so far this year also and its Oct. I think we will make it to 5 though

I also have started seeing a lot of people on ebay who are stating these vehicles are for off road use only.. its still impossible for me to get any business insurance where i am and i went at it at 2 angles one was building off road use only vehicle insurance such as go carts and such and if they registered them on the road its their fault but the insurance company backed out
2nd way was taking out the drive shafts and making them nonoperational works of art and carrying art insurance on them. Problem there was they couldnt figure out how nonoperational i had to make it.. Just drive shaft or did i also have to not install a battery.. or how far did i have to go to make it art only?
In the end the only work around for my location in Indiana was to build a car as a hobby and sell it out right to a person after i was finished.
I have been working this angle for awhile and it seems to be the best.. Also you dont have to deal with customers... So many guys out there that wants 20k rat rods that have cd players in them and can pass a nsra inspection.

note: Im not a professional and dont claim to be one i dont take customers and dont own a business only a shop where a buddy and i like to go to build cars the way we want to build cars, drive them, and sell them.

Does your accountant deduct the costs of your shop on a schedule c or as itemized deductions on the schedule a?

If she takes them on a schedule c, she thinks you own a business.

That said, I don't understand your dislike of being a business or a professional. I sure don't hide the fact that I am a professional.

Just saying..

Rustynca,
Most people dont see any of my builds as professionally built cars. I am fine representing myself as a non professional.. I didnt go to wyotech or anything to build rods anyway. I just build a rat rod the best i can and if someone likes it they are more than welcome to come inspect it and buy it..I dont have tube benders or cnc machines or anything of that nature..

Well, in my view "professional" is a very over used word, so I sure wouldn't care if anyone didn't see it as "professional". I have seen lots of "professionally built" cars from guys with shops, that are complete junk.... lots of cars out there built by "non-professionals" that are kick ass cars....

Cheers

Got everything back together and lock tighted today.. also used locking nuts and teff nuts on almost every bolt.. Front axle is at 7 degrees so perfect and we installed the 4 corner disc brakes...It will not be long now, we will have the coupe married back to the frame later this week.. Tomorrow we are dropping in that fresh 327 with a turbo 350 we received back from the machine shop a few weeks ago. Wheel base is 106 inches and the frame is standing 10 inches off the ground in front and 11 inches off the ground in back currently

Note: I am not a professional and dont claim to be one and blah blah blah dont buy my cars..

Thanks Sawzall it means alot, the back wheels are Rocket Wheels and we painted them black.. They are most likely not the wheels that will be on the back by the end of the build but they are great to roll around the shop.. Same front wheels was on the Harley Quinn coupe we built a few months back

Updates its painted firebird fire thorn red to match all the holes in the frame it has a heavily sectioned 59 impala dash installed and painted to match.. The entire underside of the car was undercoated and the entire trunk area was sprayed with a trunk liner. Give me a few more days and i will have it all back together and down to plumbing, wiring, windows and a seat and we will be driving this rod.
