While discussing alt. on another thread, I thought of a tip alot of car builders overlook when wiring their car.
Before selecting an alt. you need to do an amp. calculation on your system. Every electrical component draws a certain amount of amps. You need to total the number of amps used by all components.
For instance, if your system totals 80 amps, you may not be able to use an off the shelf unit from the parts store.
Go above the total amp number for alt. selection. For the example of 80 amps I would use a 100 amp alt.
If you go overkill it will leave you some room for adding later on.
Sort of like putting a 400 amp service in your shop even though you're only going to use 300 amps. Give yourself room to grow.
Also, use the right gauge wire. All the amperage in the world isn't any good if you can't get it from point A to point B.
