Well it seems like I've spent more time taking things apart than building. Twenty something years ago some guy that looks like a younger version of me[S did some things that the current version of me would not have done...:confused: So some of my time has been spent un-doing a few things. I also removed all the wood from the body so now I have several pieces that will eventually become a body, again. I also bought a few parts from Bow Tie Reproductions; a pair of lower cowl patch panels and a pair of rockers. The parts are pretty nice.

Replacing the wood with steel is a little bit of work. So far I've made new attachment panels for the doors. Eventually these will be boxed in and attached to the rockers and top of the cowl. The rockers are going to need to be boxed in and extended to the front of the cowl and rear wheel wells. It seems that everything I need to do has something that needs to be done first.

I'm glad that I don't have to redo anything I've

done before...lol...if I was to go back a few (35) years I'd be fixing a lot of somewhat cobbled stuff....surprised it held together....LOL..but it did, and I'm still here!!!
 
Finally got to work on my car!

I finally got a weekend off so I could do what I enjoy. I travel a lot for my job so I've spent many nights in a hotel wishing I was home so I could work on it.

A while back I removed the remaining wood from the body which left me with two floppy sections. There were some minor braces in place so I wasn't too concerned. Before I removed the wood I measured it up to see how "square" it was, well... I wasn't expecting much from a body that was made with sheet metal, wood and nails. Once the lower cowl panels were repaired, I checked the cowl section for squareness. Once I was happy with that I attached the doors. The door jambs still need quite a bit of work but I think I need an assembled body first.

After squaring up the doors I checked the fit on the frame. Well... lets just say that the sheet metal pieces are not mirror images of each other. It wasn't that bad though, so with the cowl section square on the frame I adjusted the doors to match up to the body. The diagonal measurements are all within a 1/4 inch on the long ones so I'm feeling pretty good.

The next task is to marry the rear section up with the cowl section. I purchased a pair of rockers from Bow Tie Reproductions which are pretty nice. These will tie the sections together. Then I'll need to build a frame work for the bottom of the body so it doesn't fold up when it's lifted.

It feels good to be back to work!

Work has been keeping me busy, I've been out of town for three weeks... hopefully I'll find some time this week to do something.

Hopefully you do find some time, I know I start going out of my mind if I cant work on the rat for extended periods of time.... [P

When I'm out of town I spend a lot of time "researching". The tough part is getting home and spending a few days catching up on non-hot rod building stuff. It's even worse if my "research" results in a purchase or two.
 
Klink, have you found some garage time at all? Or are you still abroad?

I'm home for the holidays. I've been busy finishing up the insulation in the shop. Hopefully I'll the shop back in order so I can get back to my hot rod.
 
I've been working really hard trying to finish the insulation project in my shop; the ceiling already had 9 inches, the walls had zero. It's a pole barn so the walls are "framed" with purlins which means theres no real depth; so I'm using rigid foam. The installation is almost done and the benefit is a more even feel to the warmth. This morning my wife gave me my gift; she checked my searches... these are what she got me. She's an automotive engineer and she noticed the wheels tagged in my favorites called for 5 3/4" hubcaps and I had recently (about a month ago) viewed these a few times... now she says "GET TO WORK!" I tend to like the building process, she likes the cruising process. She's also hoping that these push me in the direction of wire wheels, which is what she likes.

Back in November I decided to insulate the walls in my shop. I already had 9" in the cieling; well one thing led to another and the project turned into a mild remodel. The first four feet of the wall is 3/4" plywood and the top is drywall. I also added a few more plugs and some storage units. I finished it a while back, but have been very busy at work. Here's a couple of pictures...

Now that the shop is finished I'm FINALLY back to my hot rod. The body is still in a few pieces but it's getting closer to being a monolithic structure. I couldn't find the charger for my camera, so I didn't get pictures of the door jambs before they were tacked into place. This car used to be a four door, so the door jambs were separate from the body. And originally the sheet metal was nailed to wood. After some hammering and cutting here is what it looks like. A few months ago I ordered some rockers so now I’ll be able to fit them. Then I’ll need to build a frame work for the floor.

Finally got some time in the shop. I got the drivers side rocker panel ready, it's all trimmed and ready. Before that goes in I've got to create a frame for the floor. The floor frame will also provide support the door jambs and of course make the body one piece. The first part of the floor frame fits just inside the rocker. I sliced some 1.5" 1/8" wall square tubing to get it to follow the contour of the rocker.

I'm still working on the rockers. The exterior sheet metal pieces are done, it's the structural part I'm working on. It took forever to get the two sides to match. Now I'm working out the rear body support. These pieces will tie the cowl section to the back half as well as support the doors. This part of the process has been hard to get good pictures of, but here they are.

That looks like a tough piece to make indeed, following the curvature of the frame and body, it looks like you have a really nice fitment to it though!
