Thanks for the comments guys. I am looking forward to taking off all of the extra parts Ford put on... like a grain box, and fenders.

Any quick ways to remove rust from a differential housing, or just the old grind, grind and grind some more?

Most of it is 40 bucks a gallon or more..... I've heard that Borax (like 20 mule team) and lemon juice mixed and brushed or sprayed on will desolve rust and also White vinegar straight will desolve rust....never tried it but is cheap and nothing ventured nothing gained...[S
 
molases works real well...just not sure if the wife will let me put a differential to soak in molasses in the bath tub[S

maybe I should just wait until summer comes along and use the pressure washer with sand blast attachment from Princess Auto. works well..actually just thought of it. I need to wake up:confused:

Today I worked on my frame table a little. Welded the adjustable legs I made onto the bottom and made a couple of moveable cross members. I'm still needing more practice on the Miller Thunderbolt, but its coming along.

Still winter here, pretty mild but I won't be bringing the truck home until I can guarantee my wife won't need the garage for a few months:)

Finally!!!! got my truck home on friday and started actually working on it. [;) First order of business was to remove the grain box.

Then bring it home and start ripping on it. Remove the hydraulic box hoist and associated hardware.

Once that was out start taking out the front axle.

hey gold03,the u-bolts are off set to line up with the holes in axle,the spring is narrower than the pad on the axle.lol,sorry i ddint get back earlier,but i lost you,i like the build by the way,im doing a 47 ford p-up with a underslung frame.keep up the good work,i love this site,all you guys are great and you can get some cool ideas on here.

And that folks, is how I spent my week end. This thing has gone from grain truck to what you see in the last photo. Started at noon friday and finished at about 1500 hours today. The time also included driving six hours as well to get it home and taking the dogs for a run. Oh yeah, and Easter dinner times 2[cl

Now I need to establish my ride height, wheel base, and decide on tires and wheels. I think I'm going bigs and littles. Might run a set of Hoosier circle track tires in the rear with custom cut tread pattern.... but thats a ways away yet.

The 80's Toyota rear I have is six bolt but is easy to find rims cause it matches up with Chevy. The front is a five bolt Ford pattern with disc brakes.

Oh by the way that flat head runs real good! I am going to keep the old four speed for now and see how it works out. Its kinda funky with the gear whine and all.

Tonight I cut up the front fenders. My big plan is to take some of the fender bits and curves to make up my grill shell. We'll se how it goes. Also bought perch pin bolts from So Cal. I'm going to try and make the front suspension a spring over suicide.

Out back I'm leaning away from the spring over frame set up to a welder series four link and air bags or coil overs.

Sure I'll change my mind a few more times.

Busy day[;)

Removed the running boards and brackets. Took off the radiator to see what the frame looks like. Need to do a Z obviously to mount a suicide mount on this or its going to look funny. Cut the bumper mounts off and about a foot of frame on each side. Then I cut off the frame in between the two frame mounts for motor mounts. They really built this stuff tuff. Flip the front section over and have a look. Cut, weld, grind, repeat. using a piece of 1 1/2 X1 1/2 heavy wall tubing to support the front end of the motor mount. Tubing will be welded to the frame web and I am going to box the front section and it will get welded to the box plate as well.

I need a piece of round DOM tubing for my front cross member. Off that will go the suicide perch.

Only got three hours sleep last night and don't have a lot of ambition tonight:(

Thought I would start the first of many mock ups. Its all just kinda perched there to give me an idea of where to go from here. [S

Gotta work out a steering option pretty soon. Anyone ever shorten one of these steering columns and raise the steering box? I have a buddy with a bunch of Toyota stuff. Their steering boxes from early 80's trucks work well for side steer.[S I know its Japanese, but I'm not a purist yet.:eek:
