International L111 Binder Rat Build

:Okay guys, Here goes nothing......................

Picked up my 50 something international l122 on saturday. Its in great shape with minimal cancer. Im not using any of the tins ( hood, grill, front or rear fenders, side steps) so ill sell them to help fund the project.

The plan is to chop it, 7", and channel whatever i need to hid the frame. Looks only to be a couple inchs since its factory channeled already

I have a caddy 307 engine and trans setup for it but i just got a lead on a 454 setup last night. Might go that route

It looks like someone had started to do some work to it as all the parts on the bed are all the origional parts for the truck. Makes it easy since most of it was already removed.
Someone also removed alomost all the paint with a wire wheel and let it surface rust for me

I have all the tins as well as the bed removed and have the rear window cut down so far. Started getting my lines for the 7" chop lined out.

I am kicking at building my own frame (my first) i will do a heavy Z on the rear with a triangulated 4 link. I havnt decided what to do with the front yet. I want to bag it so my two options are a IFS setup with bags or reuse the solid axle and build a bag system inside a crossmember to drop the front. Im all ears for options. I know ill get ragged on for even thinking IFS

I will be hauling them to a swap meet on sept 11th and anyone local has first dibs so i dont have to pay shipping. Anything left over will be up for grabs.
I can get detailed photos if needed.

The basic kit is for $595 plus shipping and includes:
A CNC cut and jig welded cross member, steel spring arms ( what hold the axle from moving left and right) upper shock mounts and 2 air bags.

The better kit has all that plus:
lower shock mounts, shocks, swivel perches for the shocks, and spring shackles for $855.

I could design and build my own but i sure like the idea of buying from someone thats done all the work, ya know, to give some credit.

I really like the crossmember idea as it would hide the air shocks well and its a cheaper setup then a mustang II setup plus air bags.

Well started chopping the top the other day. Looks like the rear window will be 4 inches tall, the side windows will be around 7 and the windsheild a little over 11 inches.

I love Binders, the L series is a great truck, (as its the R with an uglier grill)and you will have fun with it. I always reccomend to anyone with an L that they buy a copy of Michael Perry's "TRUCK, A LOVE STORY" as it is about building that truck, with a complete history of IHC thrown in for fun.

I like the front axle idea! Love those rear split windows.

So at current count, by the time the entire roof is tacked back together, it'll have 18 seperate pieces to make it all solid again. Quite a task.

The four main sections went back to their lower counterparts pretty dang well except the rear passenger side. Tat side isnt coperating very well. Oh well.



I kinda felt bad cutting up such a nice truck as it hardly had any cancer but on the plus side, i will be taking all the fenders, hood, grill and side steps to a very large local swap meet in hopes to ass on the good parts to someone who can use them on their build.

where were you when I was forced to make my own running boards? lol. Seriously, If all else fails, post em on the binder bulletin.

That'll be my next step. I just dont know quite how to wrap these things to saftly ship so selling them ocal is my first attempt.

You will have problems with the width of the frame rails. they are only about 26" apart. also, if you are changing out the steering, there is listed under rat rod parts wanted, a guy on this forum who is looking for the steering box. You may be able to help him out and get some lil bit of cash back. You may wanna check out the last 2 pages of my build thread to see what Im talking about on the frame width issues. Had to get special manifolds yesterday for it. Just a thought.

I think one saving grace i have is i will more then likely be building my own frame since what wanna do would require modifying the stock frame so much, it would make better since to build new. And ill probably be raising the engine up to make clearances.

I think its turning out well for being my first chop. Certinly not perfect, but not the worst ive seen either [

Okay guys........ the newby is asking for advice from the more experianced here.

Apparently i did something wrong, and i think i tacked the roof up with it a little tweaked. [S

Seems the driver side (where i split the front and back) has about 1 1/2" difference in height. The passenger side has about 1/2" to 3/4"

The following photos show the problem.

My question is, whats the best way to correct this problem?!

I am guessing i will need to do a number of relief cuts in a section to slowly make them meet right?

The passanger side im not super concerned about but the driver side has me very worried. I really REALLY dont want to make any cuts in the rear of the cab where the perfect dome shape is which works in my favor since i think i need to bring the front down to meet the back.

MAN this is gonna suck!

Everything else has matched up so well. I already have the door channel installed and in a good place. I really dont want to cut those again to readjust.

EVERYONES opinion is welcome here. The more the marrier

P.S. the last photo shows a head on view which shows exactly how bad this problem is. I dont like this view one bit.

I have tried leading (without lead) on my gas tank on the bike i built and it turned out very well. But its rather expensive and it would take TONS to make this LOOK right. Lead will only be an option once the major correcting is dont to get a final look.

HELP!!!!!

After checking measurements, the drivers side is only about 3/4" difference.
The passenger side is only 1/4" which is very workable.

I think part of my problem is i might have split the front and rear too far back and still have a little radius where i need to install the fill panel. I wonder if i cut about 8" forward of the origional "goof cut" and move my patch piece forward it might help correct this a little bit.

Is my thinking wrong here?

I can post more photos if you guys need a better view of something.

Well, got the cab semi straight. Enough to fix with body lead later. I got the roof welded together enough to be bale to pull the cab off the frame.
Today i got the bed cut up. Its now 5' 10". I wanted a longer bed so the proportions looked right. Im not a big fan of the 3 foot bed.
Im really liking the look!

I also started to reassemble the door frames. This is gonna take some serious time. Good news is it looks like i can reuse the factory glass and the wing windows!!![cl

Anyone need parts?! I got quite a bit here i wont be using. Frame, front and rear fenders, hood with latches, rear axle, side steps, gas tank, headlight buckets and bezels....... Pretty much everything except the front axle, cab and bed really.

Not much change in the last week or so other then my new power plant.

Picked up a built and balanced 69 chev 350 so serve as my plant for the rat build. This thing is gonna be fun!
