I had a 70 Duster with a warmed over 273ci. I drove it fast often but not really sure how fast. I don't think it was too fast but mostly because 70 cars didn't handle that well nor stop with drums front and rear. Buddy had a 70 Mustang that I was in over 100. A coworker gave me a ride in at 400+ hp fox body. That was fast. He was a little crazy so 1 ride was enough. I was fortunate to have riden in a lot of the now valuable cars being in high school in the 70s. Jim

I worked at a Porsche dealership. Take your pick... most were fast, some were really fast.

One fine summer day circa 1963 I was driving my 283 powered '55 Chevy Bel Air 2 door hard top as fast is it would go. Scooting along on I-94 near Hudson, Wisconsin when a State Trooper heard, and then saw me. Soon I was in his back seat. He asked how fast I was going. Always one to exaggerate, and none too bright, I replied, "As fast as the car will go. Maybe 90 or so." "Don't tell me that!, he said. Can we agree you were going 75?" He explained that any faster than that I would have to go to jail and post bond. I hated to insult my car, but I agreed to his suggestion.
Been faster in other cars but probably never over a buck ten. |

My 88 Corvette. I had a 92 T Bird Sport that I thought was fast, would run well over 100, but the Vette outdid it by a long shot. After the digital speedo in the Vette would go past 130, it would just be a blur of lights. Don't know how fast it would go, but I think it had even more left in it, but I couldn't find a long enough two lane to find out. Didn't ever try it on the Interstate, just too much traffic.
Only did that a few times, the last time just after I had slowed to a somewhat more reasonable 80 mph, a deer crossed right in front of me!. Talk about a butt pucker moment! 3000 lbs of fiberglass and aluminum barreling at a 300 lb four legged grass eating machine! Was happy for the wide tires and great disc brakes!

So at 13 my step dad took me out on his new street bike. He had slowed down to 135 mph before I could look over his shoulder to see how fast.
A group with cars like GS stage 1 Buick, 1968 Ford mustang factory race car and a few others. We drove across Washington state with speedometers paged 140 plus in 1982. I see 110 in my ford escort Zx2 SR regularly |
