Steering thing???

I can not remember where I saw this item or what it is called but it is used in cars/trucks where space is a premium . The best description I can come up with is """"periscope steering""" as it drops straight down between the steering wheel and then out the firewall lower and continues the steering shaft to the box . I guess there are gears and/or chains inside....can anyone help me out of this brain fart ???
