Back to Gruber's. Not much new. A plastic car and a nice '51 Packard. Across the road from Gruber's lives Dave. He has a full soda fountain in his house. Along with lots of cars and other expensive toys. We all went over there for banana splits and malts.

Withrow Car & Traction Machine Show

This late season show always has a good turnout. It is at a rural dance hall and down the road a bit the rest is at a bar/restaurant. Met many friends and acquaintances today. Here's a few of the 250 cars that were there.
The delivery was smooth. Gasser Chevy paint was very nice and a 4 speed/ straight axle too. Chevy Vicky, '35 Cabriolet and a pair of roadsters by Henry.

Here's some more. There was two active bars going. Adult beverages were consumed. My friend Jon owns the Dodge coupe. He did an amazing amount of work to it and made sure none of it shows. Jon's brother Pat, also a good friend just got an artificial leg, ala Torchie. Two Willys in a row. Lots more patriots than snowflakes at this show. Pretty J and pretty Trike.

More of 'em. A very shiny roadster and a Deuce with a cool interior. A guy I know built this ultra smooth Cornbinder. Model A coupes are always winners. This '33 Ford truck has all kinds of clever touches. Worth 10 minutes of my time.

The end. Lots of AD trucks around but this one caught my eye. Last, a fuel oil burning Rat. Neat interior too.
This is one of my favorite shows of the year. The country setting is nice, the weather is moderate. Lots of families come out to spectate. Tractors pulling hay racks with bales on them shuttling people the 300 yards between the two locations.

Shoulda taken the pic of Withrow Ballroom when I was at the car show. Lots of memories there. At age 15-17 we would go there to polka with the local girls. One winter day Leo and I headed out there in his mother's '53 Ford. Leo smuggled a part bottle of Old Grandad from his Father's basement booze supply. He drank it all on the way. One of the attractions of the place is they sold low test beer and set ups. So at 15 we could get beer there. Not legal, but the county cop on duty didn't mind as long as we behaved.
On the night in question, Leo passed out . His head flopped on the table into a puddle of beer. We were sitting next to the cop. The officer looked at me and asked what he should do with him. I said put him in the back seat of the maroon '53 Ford in the back row. Leo was a skinny little guy so the policeman picked him up, cradled him in his arms like a sleeping baby and deposited him in the car. I stayed in the ballroom because I was having some luck with the girls, forgetting it was 10 below zero outside.
Couple hours later when I went out to the car I discovered Leo had not frozen to death. Such is the wonders of alcohol.

At least he didn't freeze!

Here's a 2019 street view shot to go along with your story, Bob :D

Back at Gruber's

Yep, snopro, that's the Withrow dance hall. Thanks for posting the pic.

Getting pretty cool here. A few cars showed up but they have had enough exposure. Here's some pics of Greg's latest project. 383 Small Block. Chassis built is classic Gruber go fast style.
