I went to a local car show last week and there were 8-10 RatRods. Almost everyone of them a hideous, slapped together pos. Even the 2-3 that could have been cool had a bunch of goofy worthless crap all over them like cow skulls and whiskey bottles. It made me realize why some other rod forums hate them so much.

LOL! I don't like some of that stuff either, but that's what makes ratrodding so cool...the tolerance. Just because I don't like it ....see what I mean? :)

Not saying Mr Willowbilly is right or wrong, but he has a point.....Some of these cars are really out there, it seems to me that the shock value is the most important thing to some people.....Some rat rodders say that the general public is against them.....Well, my opinion is that some rat rodders like it just that way.....The rebel without a cause thing, if you will......Hang what you like on your car, but when people laugh or whatever, what do you expect?....You can always call them a gold chainer......which makes you just as bad as they are.

Whatever floats your boat.............

saftey

most of the other forums are about saftey and there are alot of rat/hot rods are built very unsafe. birdpoop welds, steering components cobbled together, unsafe brakes, that is the things l think that gave RR's there bad rap.

build what ya want, put on it what ya want, JUST PUT IT TOGETHER SAFELY:eek:
THE LIFE YOU SAVE MY NOT BE JUST YOUR'ES:D

Later

I'll side with WB. I've stated before that i believe a lot of them are thrown together to be a mockery. Unpopular taste in a build style and putting crap out there as a ridicule are two different things. The owners probably have billet rods at home. Get an owner into conversation and see what his motive was for building it.
Wouldn't hurt to start distancing ourselves from crap rods. I would be real happy if Tripper would change the name of this board to Rustic Rods Rule.

I'm not gonna bash anybody for it I guess, but i totally don't understand the ones like WB described with worthless junk hung all over it..I can't get what thats supposed to represent..I want to build a semi lo-buck hotrod that probably will not get any fresh paint..to each his own, but elk horns, wash tubs and whiskey bottles don't fit into my build..

I am not into the cartoon cars and really don't like when people build stuff that is unsafe! You can build a sweet low buck rod and call it whatever you want (rat, hot, traditional, street). But if you take your time you can have that low buck rod look right, drive right, and be a ton of fun. At the same time I have seen some high dollar styuff I wouldn't take down the street as it was unsafe as it was shiney!

None of you guys know what you're talking about! Guys with traditional and shiny cars hate rat rods because the chicks dig them so much!

Some people just don't have an eye for what looks right...and when I say "right", I mean proportions, and or details. Face it some people just don't have a clue. I won't throw examples out there, because something I don't think looks right might be acceptable to someone else (besides the car owner). Heck, if you look around at just everyday drivers on the street, you'll see some pretty strange stuff, but those drivers think their ride is just plain cool...again some people just don't have a clue, but in their mind all is well in the world (at least their world).

BUT... I'm a firm believer in making it safe, and if I see something unsafe I will point it out as tactfully as I can.

The first time i got bent over this was at a show also. This thing had broken
wheel studs, a hatchet head as part of the carburetor linkage and welds that
were obviously done badly on purpose. If that is a rat you can call mine a
rustic rod.

Cars like that make mine look even better. Assuming mine isn't one you consider hideous. Although it is a 4door and I know you don't think 4doors are cool, it's gotta be better than the car with unicorns stuck all over it. Right!?

As long as it's safe I don't care. I will admit I don't care for some of the cars but usually I keep to myself unless an opinion is asked for .To me building something from nothing or from things you have lying around is the spirit of this hobby. I also enjoy finding bargains or trading whatever for the parts you need is part of the fun. I would probably still build low buck hot rods even if I was weatlhy.......They might just be a little nicer though.
I have heard of in my area of a man's wife who was killed while driving his rat to a car show for him after a steering component broke. NOT COOL!

I like them all and would hope that if it's your rig to hell with what other people think of it as long as it is safe who cares!!!!!!!!!!

This is something I really dont understand about some jurisdictions (states) Where I live, any vehicle applying for plates has to pass a safety check by a licensed mechanic. Why dont they all have this?......
