I'd drive that!

Previous owner of my house had two second-gen 2-door hardtops like that, one stocker and one with a SBC in the back seat. I haven't seen any others around here in the last 3.5 years since he moved. There used to be a beautifully restored Corvair Spyder around here too, but I haven't seen it in 15 or more years.

A VW project has always been in the deep recesses of my mind but I've never taken the plunge. Sure would like to be in the right circumstances one day to get one. You can do so many things to 'em.

What are the details on the Datsun big B? So this has triggered another old man story. Bought a junkyard refugee Datsun to use as my only vehicle for $75 in '90 or '91. Drove it everywhere until the head warped and was blowing head gaskets. Had the head shaved flat and reinstalled it which cured the gasket problem but of course it was still warped and broke the cam in half. Took the back half of the cam off and the back two spark plugs out and continued to drive it to work (slowly) for a couple more weeks. Ironically my sons rode skateboards that cost $125.

That's a cool looking car! I have an old man Datsun story to add to E-mans. I learnt to drive a clutch in my mom's 69 Datsun wagon. One day I asked her if I could use the car and she replied " it needs a starter". I went out and popped the hood and saw what I assumed was the starter and thought how hard could it be? 2 bolts a cable and a wire. I proceeded to remove it with my dad's Thorsen socket set, put it under my arm and rode my 10 speed to the local Checker Auto Parts store. As I remember the reman. replacement cost a whopping $8.00 of my hard earned dish washing money. I returned home on my bike with a shinny new starter under my arm, reinstalled it and informed my mom it was fixed. So, that ole Datsun long roof was my very first auto repair job and to this day my mom will tell you it was the worst car she ever owned. It blew head gaskets too.
