if you know someone with a borescope , you could put it thru the oil drain hole and have a look around , gunsmiths , machinists and proctologists should all have one :rolleyes:

I was thinking it may have even fallen off , normal pressure at start up , then as the oil level begins to drop the pump starts to cavitate.

If it`s not the gauge i`d look at the oil pump pickup next.

a little different....

I used masonite on mine but luan or door skin will work just as well , just seal it with something so it doesn`t warp, for cloth I used an army tent , heavy duty cheap and water resistant...

I think you can get a similar unit in home depot or lowes , for under $300 , it will work for sheetmetal but is too small for heavy stuff , you should be able to get a Lincoln 175 which is 220v for $550 , it is heavy enough to do all the things you listed
