    flathead machinists?????

Smokey, An engine is an engine to any experienced machinist. The blocks all deck the same way and align honing is no different than any other engine. I’m just about done with my first flathead build and I also wanted to go to find a “flathead” machine shop. The problem is, you’ll probably get...

How to braze or solder sheet metal to brass

Goose-em, I did end up silver soldering the brass shells to my sheet metal intake box. It worked out OK. I'm trying to keep the tarnished patina of the shells but cleaned off the area to solder very well beforehand. It's not perfect but I did it. Sid

What are good spark plugs for a Flathead

I need to pick up a set of spart plugs for my Flathead project. I'm running Edelbrock heads, so do I need a logger plug than stock. What plug would you recommend I run? Also, how to you determine if you need to run a hot or cold plug? Would it be that if you're running a little rich, you'd...

How to braze or solder sheet metal to brass

I’m working on a custom intake manifold for my flathead. The main body that sits on top of the carb is made out of sheet metal. To the top, I’ll be attaching 3 WWII howitzer canon shells, that I’ll setup like bug catcher intake. What is the best method for attaching dissimilar metals? MIG...

Keep your Carbide Burrs from loading up from aluminum

I'm sure I probably learned this the hard way. I've been working on an aluminum intake and heads and found that I hate it. The carbide burrs load up fast when cutting aluminum. At first to remove it I'd just cut on some steel. About the time I was finished and frustrated, I added a few drops of...

What Did Ya Get Done This Weekend?

Picked up another flathead and had it magged. Block is crap but the 4" merc crank is good. Installed the main seals and bolted on the oil pan to my trucks flathead. Marked the heads where a little machining needs to be done. Checked the piston clearance and found that I don't have enough. I'm...

    Rod Shop Live Feed

TiredIronGRB, I like the feed but looking at the back of your head is getting boring. Can you please have a rat chick at least walk by every now and again. And thanks for tucking in your shirt. I'd hate to see a plumbers crack. Sid

    Give me yer honest answer.

Around this time last year building hot rod wasn't even something I would consider. Browsing the web, I ran across a picture of a Rat Rod, I knew then I needed to build one. There is so much more appeal to them than a garage queen. It was something I probably could build and it gives me a...

chop? or not chop? that is the question.

I have the same issue with my 42 Ford truck cab. It is in very nice condition and I'm not wanting to chop it. I figure, after I get it built and run it for a bit, I might get a wild hair and chop it. Sid

    Who's runnin' aluminum wheels?

Ya, those are the Salt Flat specials. There's a big swap meet coming up here in Portland and I'm hoping to find some steel wheels. The problem is I need 15x4 wheels for the front and haven't found any bare metal wheels that size. Sid

What Did Ya Get Done This Weekend?

Let see, this weekend I dropped a flathead block and crank off to be tanked and magged. Did a little work on my trucks flathead, slipped on the oil slinger and spacer, added the oil pump and pickup. I could have zipped up the bottom end but I didn't have all the oil pan bolts. A friend talked me...
