Baby got a new pair of shoes

Finding tires for my truck build has been a challenge. I was going to go for the Firestone cheater slicks for the rear but couldn’t really find anything to go well with them on the front. I ran across Hurst Racing Tires site in the past and somehow forgot about them. It’s cool that they’re local...

    " rat rod" frame

OK, so let's call it marketing. I just read it after a long few days in the shop working on my truck and tearing down another flathead, which put me in a frustrating mood anyway. Sid

    " rat rod" frame

Is it wrong of me to take offense to the description of the Speedway "Rat Rod" frame. In it they say "No cobbled-up, scary stuff here". I was about to pull the trigger on a 2k order for my flathead and "Rat Rod", but now I'm having second thoughts. Sid

What was this? Ford V8 emblem on metal rod.

Yes, I did score on the flathead engine with the merc crank for $50. All I have left is the valve train then into the shop. I am a tad bit concerned that all the cylinders where sleeved. Hopefully they all mag well. It will help make up for the thousands I've spent on other flathead engines only...

What was this? Ford V8 emblem on metal rod.

Great idea. I was wondering where to mount the nitrous switch on my current build. Just adding a little Edlebrock 50 shot to my flatty. Sid

What was this? Ford V8 emblem on metal rod.

I picked this up at a garage sale the other day and though I could use the emblem on my trucks grill. He had another that said "Deluxe". Does anyone know what its use was originally for? Thanks, Sid

Just picked up my flathead block

Boy, this Flathead build is slow going. Since my last post I picked up a 4" merc crank that was suppose to have magged good. I still took it to my machine shop to have it re-magged and it took him 6 weeks to get it back. Well, come to find out there were several crack and now I have a $300 mock...

    My first rat build........

I love the stock look you have. Maybe just get the speedo to work and mount the other gauges below the dash. I'm having the same issue in a way. The stock gauge panel in the dash is small so I'm only able to mount a speedo and tach. I don't want to cut up the dash so I'll build a removable panel...

    My horn

Last night I was working on an engine stand and I dropped a bold that rolled under my father’s work bench. Digging around for the bolt I found this horn (see attached sample picture). I thought it was a train or tugboat horn, well come to find out it’s an original Aermore automobile exhaust...

    Flathead valves

In my search for valves for an 8BA Flathead I've been looking to see if there are alternatives to the expensive aftermarket "Flathead" valves. I've heard talk of some using SBC Valves but they must be cutting them because of their length. Then of course you loose that hardened end. Anyway this...

Does a timing gear need balanced

I didn't think so but this being my first engine build I wanted to check. Sid

Does a timing gear need balanced

I picked up an aluminum timing gear for my flathead and IMO the quality is lacking. There is a fair bit of casting flash that I want to clean up. Since it's such a light weight component I can't imagine that cleaning some of this up will cause any balancing issues with it but I just wanted to...

Just picked up my flathead block

Got some work done this weekend I picked up the block from the machine shop last week and started assembling the valve train. I had the cam is a Isky Max-1 regrind and I'm running stock Johnson adjustable lifters as well as stock intake and exhaust valves. The valves where gapped to .014" and...

    I need to bitch

I’m working on my first rat build (1942 ford truck, 1952 Flathead 8BA) and things are coming along great. Now I want to build a competitive nitromethane mixed injected Flathead for a front engine dragster. As luck would have it, I’m working with one of the most experienced engine builders who...

    Engine disassembly – stuck pistons

Ya, it does. So far it seems like I've purchases every cracked flathead block in Oregon. I'm 0 for 5 right now. Sid

    Engine disassembly – stuck pistons

Well, I finally got the pistons out.... the hard way. I ended up breaking out the top of the pistons. Then I chisled around the wrist pins until I could get a chisel on them and not be banging on the rod. One good smack on either side of the wrist pin split the piston right below the lower oil...

    Electrolysis Rust Removal

I've been using that process all summer to remove rust from flathead engines. To the water I do add sodium carbonate, Arm and Hammer Washing Soda. Do not use baking soda as that's sodium bicarbonate, and don't use their laundry detergent. It's a bit hard to find but I get it here locally at Fred...

    my 600 dollar winter project

I just inherited my fathers 1979 Chevy Caprice Classic (4 door). It's has been sitting for about 2 years but fired up after charging the battery. It runs rough but still runs. Now I'm wondering what to do with it. I've always wanted to enter a demolition derby. Sid
