4 link rearend/straight axle frontend;
so, can someone answer me a question l have about this kind of set up.
this has confused me for a long time. how can a person claim that the only true way to build a old school hot rod is with a straight axle, then put a four link rear end and thinks this is OK.
am l missing something or did people build cars in the 50's and 60's this way?

LATER:confused: :confused:

In the early 60's most rods had transverse rear springs and enclosed tailshafts,
but there was the odd rod being built with 4 link rear ends.

There was also an occaisonal article in HRM about 4 links in the early 60's
And putting bigger engines than the flatheads meant you needed to consider altering drivelines

So you put a different (open tailshaft) rear end in. While it was easy enough to fit the transverse spring but why bother messing with the rear a bone, when a 4 link setup could be done nice and cleanly.

Most of the judgement on this is due to a solid front axle is just better looking in the front if your not running fenders, its just the old style look, yes long ladder bars would work also in the rear, and this is just my 2 cents.
Build what you like, with what you have, and go have fun, tell everybody else when they pay for it they can build it there way.

What's right and what's wrong with it? Do you want to look at, or take it out and flog the hell out of it on the street and the strip?

I f s

l get a lot of flak from the "REAL" hotrodders about my I F S on the dodge.

funny thing is, l been doing this since the 60's and the family's been roddin' and racin' since 1955! dad raced a 1937 jalopy on a 1/2 mile oval dirt track with a straight axle from 1962 to 1974 when the rules changed to 1955 or newer only body styles. a few pics of the kind of cars dad raced and raced against.

so old school is in my blood, but l don't like the way a straight axle handles and rides.
like Hank Jr;
guess l went and broke there, family tradition

To some people the "right " look is everything . I agree the straight axle looks best on open fenders if it were on full fenders I would go M II so fast it would make your head spin !

Who gives a rats a$$ for what is right to use and what is NOT right to use!! We're building rat rods here....no rules..just build them as YOU want to. If anyone DOESN'T LIKE the 4 link you run in your car, the MII front end, the OHV engine......well...let them go cry about it over on the H A M B :)
