Yep, they are pretty straight forward to rebuild, but hang onto your wallet:

And if you need internal parts like a pitman shaft it gets real pricey. I had to rebuild the 56 Ford pickup box in my 27 and the shaft assembly was something like $ 400.00........20 years ago!

It does make a real difference in the handling though, nothing worse than a car that won't take orders.

Have you tried taking up the slack? Unless your box is shot you can often take up a sloppy steering by tightening this nut, just dont overtighten.

sneaky, I still got mine from the build. It was loose too, but it my can be tightened up, didnt bother looking at it. PM me if you need it

Dont panic,LOL thats not a 48 box its just a ford box I used for a pic to show the tention nut.

Well, the reason I say that is, because mine doesn't appear to have any adjustment at all. I hate to go to power steering, because this truck already steers like it's power steering anyway. The narrow model A wheels make it very easy to steer.

It will be on the opposite side of the output shaft, so it should be towards the motor. Loosen the lock nut then turn the center screw while gently moving the steering wheel back and forth until the slack is gone. Just dont overtighten just snug enough to remove slop.

just remember that that will take up the "slack" (distance between gears) from one gear to another but won't do anything if the gear teeth themselves are worn out (IE: side of the teeth where they mesh)
