Well....here we go again. I saw this here in the for sale area a couple weeks ago, and since it was a Studebaker, I had to say yes. I really didn't need another project, but I'll admit it....it's a sickness I'll probably never get rid of, so I guess I should stop complaining and get on with it.

Like the thread title says, its a 1954 Studebaker 3R5 Pickup. All in all it's a solid truck and it's all there. As you'll see in some of the pics, there is some rust, but it's really not bad for this area of the country (we aren't as lucky as some of you that live in dryer climates...here everything rusts...through). There isn't any rust that can't be fixed with some metal manipulation and a welder. There is a ton of bondo in it, but most of it is to cover dents.....again manipulate the molecular structure of the metal and we can make it good again without as much of the bondo.

The plan is to mount the body on an S-10 chassis using some of the tips and tricks from some of the build threads on here and especially from 62chevyII's thread. The motor is probably going to be the 327 I just pulled out of the 40 Studebaker. The transmission is still up in the air, but I'd like to do a 5 speed set up, but again, we'll see what happens and what kind of deal I can run into.

It will be a little while until I actually get to do anything, because I have a couple other little projects I have to finish up before I can really get into this one (including finishing installing the tuned port and 700R4 in the 40).

Anyway...since we all love pictures and I made you wait long enough (forgive the cellphone pics)....

Like I said there is some rust through, but the floors really aren't to bad (again especailly for this part of the country)

Like I said, there is "some" bondo....but this is by far the worst....right over top of the wires for the tail lights

That's all for now, but I wanted to get a thread started for when I do get to start working on it. To be continued...................

Great Stude, I always thought that style was the best looking pickups of their time. That slab of bondo is hilarious :D.
On my first vehicle, a 55 Chev pu, I put a huge blob in the hole over the headlight (17 yrs. old and stupid), at least an inch thick - T boned a guy in a 63 Poncho and it flew thru the air like a missile , a kid picked it up "here's a piece of your truck mister". After that I decided welding those holes up was better...

Nice truck Ron, fellow Stude brother! You know I have a 1954 3R5 too. :D

I didn't know that Don. I knew you had the 50 or 51 Commander(?) but can't recall any pics of the 54 pickup.

ZZ....I've always like the body style of these, but anyone I found was to expensive or to rusted...this one wasn't either, so like I said...here we go again:D[;) I can't wait to get it in the garage and start getting rid of some of those chunks of bondo

And don't worry Keith, I'll be keeping everyone updated...thanks again for the lead to the truck

I've always been fond of this body style of Stude pickup... Probably my second favourite after the Chevrolet Advance Design. I really like these ones with the full-width grille and headlight assembly-they look much less tacked together than the earlier ones with just the headlights on the fenders and the smaller grille in between the fenders.

Look forward to progress as you make it, RoddingRon. I like your down-to-earth approach to rod building. Thanks for sharing your pics.[P

Regards,
Shea:)
