I have 3 inches at least of play in my '50 F-1 box, which I think is causing a slight DW. Can anyone tell me how the adjustment works on these boxes?

I've been googling it, but i keep finding instructions that say "now adjust the play out", etc. My question is HOW - there is a nut and a star shaped washer on the side, which I assume is the adjuster but not sure how it all works

THanks!

There's a sloted screw going thru that nut a washer. If you can't see the slot in the top of the screw it may have a "cap" on it. Pop the cap off, loosen the nut, which is a jam nut, and turn the screw in to tighten the slack. Three inches of slack in the steering wheel is a lot, it may not adjust out before it makes the steering too tight. Then it's rebuild time.:(

cool, thanks. I'll have to take the box out to get to that screw probably.

I wonder if my jam nut is loose, b/c I swear when I first started driving it, the box was tight. Seems to be getting looser the more I drive it.

just a polite reminder to check all other "wiggle points" for slack as well.....pitman arm, drag link, all the tie rod ends....a little here and there will add up as well.....and i would recommend checking all of those BEFORE i went to the trouble of removing my steering box

just thought i'd mention it.......not trying to be insulting or anything:eek:

No offense taken! Fortunately the whole front end is basically new(ish) stuff so its not worn out. I'll double check everything and the toe adjustment.

I looked at it again, its prob 1.5" of play, not too bad, but worth tightening up a little.
