If the speedo needle sweeps left to right, turn it clockwise. The only positive mechanical hook up is to the odometer it self through a set of small gears. The speedo is a magnet attached to the cable side of things, while the needle is on a shallow canister/drum that the magnet rotates inside of, but is not attached to. The magnetic force of the rotating magnet drags the canister/drum around in a circle, (while the vehicle is moving) against the tension of a light spring that controls the canister/drum, and returns it toward zero when you slow or stop. Without the spring, it would just whip around to the needle stop, and stay there. Even if you went with a backward rotation, it won't cause any damage. The needle would rest against the stop and the odometer would start to unwind mileage readings, but that's it. When I was a kid they said I was wrecking stuff when I tore things apart. Ha...I was getting an education!! Sniper
