i have a ton of room for a large fuel tank and i was thinking about building a custom one for my self has any of you guys done this....it wont be able to be seen so just a regular box would work

can this be done with a regular mig welder with gas attached

i guess what im asking is,,,is it worth my time to do this or should i just go to the junk yard and avoid all possible safty issues im a decent welder not the prettyest welds but there shure strong

so any comments or pictures, tips, diagrams would be helpful:D

if i do go to the junk yard wich vehicles have the best shaped tanks to fit my truck

in the picture it would go in the space in the rear of the frame wich is the right side on the picture the only thing is it cannot come up higher than the frame rails

I have built some tanks. It is not hard to build one, put in baffles, check it with air and soapy water before you put it in. Seems like alot of salvage truck tanks would also work. I am guessing rear tank in a 79 ford f150 would fit between the rails. but I bet alot of other ones would work too.

Actually some of those newer Ford tanks will also fit.I think.Alot of them are poly also.So you will never have to worry about rust.

I've fabricated many all stainless or aluminum though. Boneheads right you need baffles especially on bigger tanks. The plus is you can put the fill neck were you need it. Versus going though a bunch of used ones to find what you want. Yes you can use a mig. Just fill it with water when your done let it set you'll see the leaks if any.

My 96 Impala has a poly tank and its really thin for a 20 gallon. I don't know how much they are to buy, but for clearance issues you might want to check them out. 91-96 caprices should have the same tank. There always seems to be a lot of wrecked taxis in the yards around here.

I just made one, and your right about the gas, i had water in it and no leaks, as soon as i filled it up it started leaking a little, so now i have to fix it somehow.

I have alway pressurized the tank with air and check the seams with soapy water. You can also pressurize with air and use a gauge and let it sit over night. It means having a threaded filler neck, or some way for it to hold pressure.

thanks for the info guys i think im gonna give it a try making my own tank
if it dont hold gas it will make a nice toolbox!!!!!:D
