Are these evn older than drum brakes or are they drum brakes? I'm still new at this and am not good at identifying parts yet. I'll try to get a closer pic if you need it.

They MIGHT be mechanical drum brakes,
as opposed to the later hydraulic drum brakes.

I forget when Ford switched, might have been '38.

Looks like the large bolt pattern,which was '37 - '41 ?

Those appear to be cable operated (as opposed to rod operated) mechanical drum brakes. Found on '38 Fords. I can't remember if '39 was the first year of hydraulic brakes, but I think so. Also, I think the wide 5 bolt pattern on the wheels was used from '36 to '38, maybe '39. I used to know all that stuff, but old age, you know...

The simple answer is yes they are drum brakes.

Like others have said, they look like cable operated mechanical brakes with a Ford wide five bolt circle. That would make them 1937 or 1938 I believe. The wide five pattern was used from 1936 to 1939 but in 1936 the mechanical brakes were rod operated and in 1939 the brakes were hydraulic.

Frame number

The frame number will help tell the story. Should be in 3 places on that frame. Front # located top of frame where steering box bolts on. Middle of left frame on top. And left frame top just in front of rear spring cross member. Front number begins and ends with a star. The numbers 18- will precede the front numbers. Those frames where built from 35 to 41 for the pickups. From 35 to 40 for the cars. Cars had two body mounts on outside of frame. They where mounted close to rear wheels. Wide five wheels from 36 to 39. Give us the numbers maybe that will help.
