I am about to paint my latset project and I can't see giving Earl or Maaco any money but I only want to paint this project, so I need a cheap but decent HVLP sprayer (compressor and gun) to do the one time job!

Any suggestions?

Ive rented one from my local rental place a couple times. It was a high quality unit, turbine and all. I think it was around $50.00 for a week. They did charge a refundable cleaning deposit though.

I second the Harbor Freight suggestion. I bought my gun for $10 on sale, the same one can't be more than $20 off the shelf on any given day. You can get a 5-10 horse compressor from them for beans too. Plus hoses, quick releases -- maybe $225 tops (not counting the price of the paint, that can be semi-hefty).

I will 3rd the Hardor Freight suggestion. Mine is from there also.Good enough to paint a bunch of parts with and then some. The compressor alone is a good investment just to have around the house.

Astro Pneumatics makes a really nice Iwata knock off. I've used one for a couple years now and its been great at less than 1/4 of the price of the Iwata comparable. I think Toolsparadise or spraygunworld.com maybe the same place has the best deals on em.

It's not dirt cheap, like the HF stuff, but I really like my Sharpe Cobalt gun. It was around $100 at my local NAPA, and it's been going strong for about 5 years now. Of course you could buy a new harbor freight gun every year for 5 years for the same money....but I like the fact that I have a gun that I can actually get different size tips and rebuild parts for. I had been using a cheapo 26 gallon comp. that I bought at walmart, but it gave up the ghost with a bang last year (after 8 years and several paint jobs), so I bought a 33 gallon Craftsman ( less than $300 on sale, with a 10 piece tool kit included) that I have been very happy with so far.
