Which kind of best, Strongest? Shortest? Best gears? Cheapest? wait...... Turbo 350,
the Turbo 400 is stronger, but bigger and heavier. For years and years the 350/350 has been a standard in hotrods, for a reason.

rear end

could you help me decide what kind of rear end and maybe the gear ratio i should use if i go with the 700r4? [S

You are kind of asking the impossible here. The rear end choice is governed by a lot of factors............the body style you are using, is it channeled, etc. The ONLY way to know what rear end you need is to put the tires and wheels you are going to use next to the body so they look good, and then measure the wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface distance. That is the rear end you will need.

There are so many good rear ends out there that will work for a hot rod. 8 and 9 inch Ford, S10, early Ford banjo, etc. Just depends on how strong you need it to be.

As for the ratio, if you are going to run an overdrive transmission you can go lower than what you would use with a non overdrive one. You could easily get by with a 4:10 or even deeper rear, but I would think something in the 3.50 range would be best for all around use.

Behind a 700... 3.50 is a good overall ratio. I prefer 3.73 , it's perfect for the street & also good for the highway. 4.11 is too low IMO & not very highway friendly. Of course... this is just my 2¢!

For a guy that loves Fords shouldn't you be talking about a 351 and a C6 transmission? :D

As for your transmission and rear gear question it really depends on what tires you run, the cam and stall speed. 700r4, TH350 or TH400 and a 3:50 - 3:73 gears will work with a basic stock setup on the motor with rear tires that aren't out of the ordinary.

Do lots of research...and get to know where everything will be before you go buying stuff.

Run a 4-speed, muncie if your going to run it hard, saginaw if your going to light them up only on occasion. Remember, real hot rods are supposed to have three pedals , LOL!!!

Don't need electronics on the

350, 400, 700R4 or the 200R4, the 4L60E is simply a 700R4 with electronic valve body controls....I've done builds on them all....I've always gone with the 350 when well built...it's lighter than the 400 but the 400 handles more torque.... the 700R4 for economy and relatively strong with the od and the same for the 200R4....the latter needs a lot of mods to handle any healthy motors....it's got the lightest internals...well built models will handle 500 lb ft of torque without an issue....billet internals and custom sprags and planetary's will do more....for simplicity i like the 400 and 350's....for a real street car, gotta be a 4spd or manual in general..to keep it fun and just seems right...for consistency in drag racing / bracket racing....gotta be an auto...JMHO...never been fond of the powerglides although they are well used and are stout when properly built.....
