I Just bought this brake setup

I was informed that it is 42 ford spindles and 55 F100 brakes and backing plates.

I just wanted to verify that with anyone who might know.

Also the spindles look different (this may be due to cutting off the steering arms) and the grease fittings are on the side on one and straight on on the other. Is this something that will need repaired?

Thank you for any input:D

I've been waiting for someone with a better memory than mine to respond. I think square back spindles were from '42 to '48. The brakes do look like F100 but F1 brakes are similar. I can't recall the differences.

Sorry David, I just noticed this thread.

Well, the brake setup looks like F100 stuff to me, pretty sure about that. The spindles have me a little confused. The one with the grease fitting on the side do look like 42-48 Fords with the arm cut off. The other one is the one I am not sure about because I have never seen one with the grease fitings in that spot.

It could be that it is just different than ones I am familiar with, but I have owned a bunch over the years and none had them there. But it is no consequence, it will work on a 28-48 axle just fine. You just might have a problem with that bottom grease fitting because a bolt on arm will kinda go in front of that spot.

I wouldn't hesitate to use them though, those are a pretty good setup.

Thanks.

I am pretty sure the one with the straight on fittings is the right side so I will only have to worry about one arm.

Now to find steering arms and hopefully I can find one with enough clearence that i Will be able to get a 90 degree zerk fitting in.

As far as checking the kingpins to see if they are still good what do I look for?

And the drum is to big to fit in the recess on early ford wires so do they make a spacer/adapter for that application?

You can drill and tap a grease zerk hole where you need it and plug the old one. Check Speedway for bolt on steering arms.
Look for wear and pitting on the kingpins. If in doubt Speedway has new ones and adapters for wheels.

You could grease it, remove the zerk and put the steering arm on afterward. Repeat every spring.
Put the spindles on the axle and check for play by moving the axle nut end of the spindle up and down.
Be careful with the fit of the wire wheels. I can't remember the details but Blue Eyed Devil, GRB and a few others here can give you the details.

On one grease fitting on my 27 I have to do exactly what Bob suggested, there was no clearance for one so I greased the kingpin real well and plugged it. Every so often I pull the pin and regrease it manually. It isn't something you need to grease every month or anything like that.

As for the steering arms, lots of people make bolt on arms. Speedway, Superbell, Chassis Engineering, etc. If you aren't using a dropped axle you sometimes have to grind a little bit of radius off of the top of the arms so they clear the bottom of the axle when turning, but just a little bit does it.

The guy I bought the brakes off of also sold his axle so i wrote him asking if he would be selling the steering arms also because he had a set on the brake setup in the pictures he sent me
