I have a C4 trans in my rat out of a 71 Torino. A while ago I noticed that it is leaking a lot of trans fluid. After checking it out, I noticed it coming from the drive side of the trans around the tail cone. Further investigation showed that there is about a 1 1/2" hole in the cone that is open. I am assuming that is where the speedo mechanism is supposed to be.

My question is what all is supposed to be in there? I can stick my finger in and feel what I think is a gear, but nothing else. Can I get an electrical sending unit or does all that have to be mechanical?

All the c4 were mechanical speedo cables. I take it you are not running a speedo.

All you would need is the trans end out of any mid 60's to early 80's Ford. Just weld the end shut and make sure the o-ring is in place.

There is a small fork shape retainer that holds it in place.

Actually there is just no speedo in it yet. Have not gotten that far. What all would I need to get to go in the big gaping hole to make it functional?

a few things...

Not really a Ford guy but....
The speedo housing/adapter, the bolt and retainer, the speedo gear and if the adapter doesn't have it, a seal that goes into the adapter.......Not ton's of money and any trans shop should have some lying around.... only thing would be the gear ratio should you decide to use it.....

A pic to help

If you are looking to go with a cable. use the cables out of a 1965 through 1968 Ford They have end you need for the trans and the other end is a screw on end witch would work with most after market speedos. Or if you have a little extra cash go with a after market one.

There are also some after market electronic speedo that have the adapter that will work in the C4 trans.
