I’m pretty sure I know the answer is “don’t do it” but I’m going to ask. In an effort to save $, I’d like to reuse one of the front leaf springs currently on my truck as a transverse spring over the front axle. The current spring is about 6 inches longer than I require so I was thinking about cutting then welding together the leaf with the eye. I’d also stack a leaf below it to help with re-enforcement. I know the weld will be brittle and I’ve read that it could be heated and quenched in oil to re-introduce carbon that was lost during the welding process.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Over and out,

Is the savings really worth the risk? I'm no welder/metallurgist, but that sounds like an insanely bad idea for a transverse.

A spring and axle shop can re-roll the spring eyes. I just had one done 65.00. If its a low arch spring it will probably be better to just have them custom make you a spring to the dimensions you need.

try trailer springs, as an option- i just bought one rated 1750 lb and 26" eye to eye for only $30-$35.....at Tractor Supply

and as for cutting one...don't you value your life and the life of others on the road more than that!? seriously i wouldn't even think about it...

I just had to ask. I was reading about it on another forum where it was suggested it was OK to do. I of course don't believe anything I read and about half of what I see, so I had to ask.

26" is exaclty what I'm looking for but I might need a little higher rating. I know of a trailer shop in town and will check them out.

Thanks,

Sid

its always o.k. to ask- and remember, we are as concerned about a safe rod as we are anything around here, so i don't think anyone here would steer you wrong! hope you find what you need
