i just sent some money off for a set of spindles that will need to be cleaned up. what's the best way to do this? a buddy of mine used CLR on some other parts and it seemed to work good. i usually use my angle grinder with a wire brush cup on my finds, but for obvious reasons i'm not going to use it here.
thanks,
chris

I toss them in the blast cabinet. If I am not replacing the kingpin bushings I take two washers that are slightly bigger than the bore and put one on either side of each bushing. Then I run a small bolt and nut through them and tighten it up. This acts as a shield to keep abrasive from getting into the bushing interior. I also lightly dust the surface where the bearings ride, you really can't hurt much there. You will want to protect the area where the grease seal rides though, and duct tape is great for this.

When done I spend some time at the bench grinder. One side of mine has a wire wheel on it and I shine up the entire surface making it ready for degreasing and painting.

The best thing I ever bought for detailing parts like spindles is a Dynafile. after you get the grease off, blast them, then clean up the forging lines with the flie, blast them again and paint them. They will look great.
