I was cleaning up after getting everything back together and found this part laying in a towel that I had my old transmission filter and pan sitting in. My 5 year old daughter was "helping" me and was messing with stuff from time to time. I thought I kept a good eye on her but found this part. The only thing I removed from my tranny was the governor, filter and pan. I inspected the governor right before I put it in so I don't think it came from that.

Any ideas? It's a TH400 transmission. I was working on some other front suspension parts too but I don't recognize this piece.

If I remember correctly you had a deep pan transmission , That looks like the spacer that goes on the filter retainer bolt, between the filter and the valve body. Thats my guess ! It's not part of the govenor

I hate when I have leftover parts![S..I had to put a clutch and heater core in my son's 85 Mustang...Had to dismantle the whole car almost...had a lot of parts left over from that one!!:D..Sure hope ya get it figured out...CR

Yep, I think it's the spacer for the filter as mentioned. I need to find the box for the new filter because my father in law said sometimes the newer filters don't require them.

Anyone know if I can leave it out or does it need to go back in?

the ones that don't require the spacer is the car pan you have the truck pan . the purpose of the spacer is to hold the filter down at the bottom so that it will always stay submerged in the fluid . were you able to fix your 1-2 shift apply shudder ?

Thanks guys, I got the spacer back on. I got to get the pan on and some fluid in it and take her for a test run and see if any of that fixed the shift problem.

If it hasn't fixed it is there a way to check the actual modulator (not the lines... no leaks there) or is it cheap enough you can just replace it?

Not to hi-jack the thread, but it's always neat to see young toddlers get involved and try to help their parents. When my boy was just barely two, he decided to help me wash my M/C which had long upswept fishtail pipes on it, I had to go inside for a split second and came right out - finished drying the bike off and proceeded to start it[usually a one kicker] Well it sounded really funny while kicking it over and then it fired - my boy was standing about 5' behind the bike - he had stuck the hose down the pipes and filled them up with water - black sooty water all over him and he was laughing - but not his Mom. Bless their little hearts. Keep her interested Kelseydum

That's pretty funny. I can picture him looking like alfalfa on the Little Rascals when he did stuff like that.

My daughter is really interested in pinstriping. I got here her own kit for her 5th birthday. I think it's cool that she's already starting to learn which tools are which.

No, unfortunately that didn't fix it. I did however, in doing some research, come across some info. Being a newbie I wasn't aware of this but apparently you have to use as little (length) rubber hose as possible on the vacuum line. I had a piece of steel line in between two rubber hoses but the hoses are way too long. I think one of them might be collapsing. I'm going to add a steel line (much longer) with a piece of rubber hose on each end no longer than 3" or so. Maybe this will fix the problem. If not I'll replace the actual modulator.

The rubber hoses on there right now were something I just found in the garage, and one side is a lot thinner wall hose. If either of them are collapsing then it's this one. It only seems to do this in first gear though when I punch it a little, and I could see this line being weak enough that it would collapse... We'll see tomorrow.
