Hadn't been in for a few years. One tooth needs root canal and crown $2500-$3000. Plus another crown and some random fillings ect it's going to kill $5000. Dang, I need to sell something or start pulling teeth, and I kinda like all my teeth. My obama care dental covers 30% but not crowns and root canals.

I've spent many thousands of dollars through the years and still have had to pull several teeth. Now, at 75 I'm faced with either implants, which are expensive, or an upper full denture, which I am advised aren't very effective. I'm concerned about jaw bone loss which will destabilize the implants.
The missing teeth are in back and don't show much.
Really don't know what to do.

I'd like to hear from some guys that have years of experience with dentures and gather some opinions.

Sorry WB3 for taking a bite out of your post.

Seems to be dentist day. Me too. Had one pulled today that had been root canaled. and eventualy went bad anyway it also had bone los around it. After pulling it the Doc pulled it he did a bone graft so I'll have enough bone to support an implant. I have another implant and it's about ten years old and it seems to be fine. I was told it is better to have an implant than dentures because ther is less stimmulation to the bone with dentures and more bone loss.

One of these days I'm having all mine [what few I have left] pulled. Mine are brittle and break at nothing. Never have been much good, tried a couple of root canals and caps, the caps pulled off in a matter of a few weeks. My insurance pays 50%, but I don't have the other 50% or see it happening anytime soon. And I will have to be put to sleep, I get violently sick anytime any dental work is done.

What do you have available for a '52 F1 Ford? Thought I could help with a few bucks.

Not much, most of my Ford parts are older. Some 35-36 beds, 40-46 cabs. As soon as the title gets back I'll put the 62 Ranchero up for sale. And the 1956 Pathfinder camper trailer. Then it might get down to pick one, the 59 F250 4x4 or the 40 panel. Or sell license plate collection, silver or guns. In that order.
Also long overdue for a different daily driver.
On second thought, guns aren't an option.
But it really isn't a grim situation, I've got plenty of smalls that need to go anyway and a couple grand in the tooth fairy fund. I'm good, just hate spending money I could spend on car stuff.

bob: No personal experience, but my father had dentures (full set) for 40 some years. My mother has a full upper plate, some 30 + years and counting. I'm next (and avoiding it like the plague) but have no reservations about dentures.

The way I see it, dentists are blood-suckers. If they give you dentures, you pay your bill and you're down the road. If they string you along with fix this, save that, your bills never end. Now, I understand the field, science and methods have "advanced", but so have their methods for draining your wallet.

I've had an upper full denture for about 6 years. I love it compared to my POS natural teeth, just glue and go. From what I've heard, it's the lower denture that sucks. Those are really hard to keep in. I dropped 11k on a bridge for my lower front 6 this past year. They're the nicest teeth I've ever had!

Had a route canal go bad![S Didn't know they could go bad... The dentist I ended up going to must have worked with the Nazi's early in her life!:D

I'm pretty much leaning toward just getting the one extracted that needs all the $$ since it's in the back and won't show or affect other teeth. I have enough to get everything else done and the other crown I need in the spring.

Yeah, I had one go too. Had to do a root tip extraction - they cut into the side of the gum, cut the tips of the roots off and pry them out. It was the 'pry out' part that was brutal. He ruined a dental tool prying, I near passed out twice. Longest ten minutes of my life so far. After it was done he said "Ya know, I don't think I ever did get that numb." (He shot me up 6 times!)

Fortunately I have fairly good Union health coverage (was even better before Obamacare) - they've paid into the 6 figure range for my dental work over the years.

Getting one pulled tomorrow and getting fitted for a flipper for the 4 front top ones that got knocked out in a bike crash.
I am tired of looking like a tweaker, hillbilly hockey player

I'm 43 and had all my teeth pulled at 27. Paid $50 for the first one and $25 each for the rest. Got a set of $250 upper dentures, didnt have the cash for the bottoms. After awhile my bottom gums toughened up and didnt even need a lower set. Got a new set, uppers and lowers about 5 years ago, alittle more expensive, but never wore the bottoms. After a week, you get used to the uppers and cant stand not to wear them, but the bottoms hurt just like a toothache. I can eat anything but peanuts. I think they invented peanut butter just for us toothless guys. Getting all your teeth pulled is scary but never ever having a toothache again is wonderful. All the money i save from going to the dentist i can spend on my car.

Yea the prying and digging was tough. He finaly drilled out the last of it. Was in the chair for about an hour. Was shot with novacaine 3 xtra times.

I had one wisdom tooth that never came in, it was laying down. I was gassed up good but still remember them about pulling my jaw out. I was swollen up like I'd been in a fight.

woa shivers down my spine....
I got butchered by a surgeon at the age of 6, which was pretty dramatic to me, but now at 45, I still only have one tiny filling in one tooth :)
Still, every dentist visit results in myalgia like there`s no tomorrow...
good luck all
