i just picked up a 65 tbird last week with a 390 in it, since then ive adjusted the timing 3 times, the carb twice, and it still is having issues, but last night while drivng it backfired so bad that it lew a hole in my air filter and then sucked it back up into the motor. It still runs but has no power, this weekend i plan on rebuilding my holly 500 double pumper for it, putting in new spark plugs/maybe a new coil pack, and an oil change. Then run some carbon remover thru the engine in an attampt to rempve whats left of the filter, has this happend to any of you guys before?

Not exactly but had a backfire thru carb, the foam inthe edelbrock filter caught on fire and melted all into the carb. It was quite a mess to clean up.

I've heard bad things about those triangular filters. I heard from one guy his filter caught on fire (from a backfire I'm guessing) but he didn't notice and the flames shot down into the motor basically blowing the motor up. Pretty much had to swap motors for the cost of fixing his.

check your valves

sounds like a bad valve or you might have a worn cam lob...i assume you checked the obvious...like firing order....

If you're timing it by the marks, might wanna check to see if the damper has slipped. Check yer points and plugs gaps. Maybe try adjusting your timing with a vacuum gauge. Timing chain could be used up - I think you can check it by pulling the fuel pump, but don't how much is too much slack.
