He is talking about early ford wires in general, with the most common hot rod application being the 16" version that was used in 1935. To use these wheels on anything other than '40-'48 Ford drums requires a big clunky adapter which IMO is not only ugly looking but dangerous. The "basket" on the ford wires is made to seat on the early Ford drums, and that is an itegral part of the strength in this design. Fast forward about 75 years - as time does take it's toll on the strength and integrity of steel, and you will be putting more weight, speed, and stress on this wheel that it was designed for even when it was brand new. Would you trust an "adapter"? Do what you want, but it is something to think about...
