My South Dakota car license plate collection is now complete, I have every year of metal plates. Just scored this 13, the first metal plate. They began licensing in 1905 but you had to make your own, most of those were leather and I only have a 1906. A small metal disc was issued then and I still need a disc. They are hard to come by. I am mounting them all on plywood, a decade per and the local courthouse is putting them on display.

How long did it take you to collect them all?
The feeling of accomplishment you have must be really satisfying.

Pretty cool!

My collection is have a plate from every state that I've been to. And the plate has to be pre war. I haven't accomplished this yet.

My other collection is to have a plate from every state that I've bought cars from. This one I'm pretty close to accomplishing.

That's how I started out, 12 years or so ago, to have a plate from every state I've been to. I used to carry extra Mt. Rushmore plates for trading stock. I even traded a pair of those for my Yukon Bear plate and Klondike gold panner plate while I was going through Canada. I also like war time plates from any state because they were all conserving metal.
I have soybean (composite) plates, copper ones from Arizona, brass ones from Maine, several aluminum. I still need a porcelain one though.
