I was channel surfing at the HAMB, and someone posted pictures of cars from the NC show. Right there in the middle was our own Hotroddaddy's Merc. :):)

Looks great John. Congrats.

Don

Unfortunately, in true to form HAMB fashion, not everybody was complimentary........but that is just them.............WE LOVE IT !!!!!!

Thanks guys, im glad somebody likes it. I am starting to notice a change in veiws lately though, it seems alot of the rat guys are now saying they are traditional, which i think is bs, there just trend followers, and are too scared to go against the grain, even at this show, its changing, ive been going for years, and if i would have brought it three years ago it would have stole the show, now it kinda ruffled a few feathers, but i sure got alot of attention on the freeway. Im just glad i had a trouble free trip, almost a 1000 miles and no breakdowns.

It's probably like any other segment of the hobby, be it customs, or hot rods, or motorcycles..........things just change and evolve. I look back on some of the cars and things I liked even 10 years ago, and wonder what I saw in them.

I saw a thread on that same forum, where Little John Buttera built a new car. (for those youngsters among us, Lil John is like Chip Foose, and has been building show stopping cars for maybe 40 years or more) Anyway, he built this car, and it was "different" to say the least. All of the guys on the HAMB were saying how he had messed up, etc. Finally, Lil John came on and posted. What he said was as basic and to the point as you can get.

He said "you guys don't get it. I didn't build this car for you, I built it for me, and don't really care if you like it or hate it." I'm paraphrasing his comments, but that is the crux of it. Coming from one of the icons of the sport, it shut them up real fast.

He he, I saw you trying to reason with the "unreasonable" on the other forum, John. Talking to some of those guys is like talking to a brick. No, the brick might actually be able to reason a little better. :D

Some of them are so hard line in their beliefs, and yet, when one of their buddies comes on with something "not traditional" it is fine with them. Funny part is, most of them have no idea what traditional really is, and I don't think there is only one definition of traditional.

We still like your car HRD. You aren't a sheep. :D:D

Don

The funny part is , if you see the two guys standing beside the car, one is me and the other is an artist name squindo, i believe, he is also a member of the hamb, lives down your way don, but we were discussing the car in which he offered to trade for his model a. Plus i talked with some other members there, one being the guy who took the pics, they all loved it. Im finding some guys will not speak up against the masses, others just talk big cause they are behind a computer, oh well , the sad part is im sure they would flame your ride, cause its not traditional, but the quality is far better than most any on there. and in all reality, it does not bother me, now if barris or winfield thought it was junk, then i would be hurt, but who are these guys.

Hey don, as soon as i get the pics developed, i want yuo to see this truck this guy brought, i think youll love it.

HRD, I'm sure that you abide by what don quoted Butera as saying. You built it for you & no one else. If others like it then that's just gravy. And the hell with them that don't.

Don,
I saw that car & it was an absolute work of art. He had some real heavy weights helping him out too although it was more like a collabration! I think he's the one that really popularized the Billet craze as we know it. Helps to have u're own CNC machine too!!!

Yeah John, I'd love to see those pictures. I think I met that artist you are talking about at Daytona maybe 7 years ago. He looks familiar.

What the whole thing boils down to is, does the car make you happy. That is why we build them. Let's face it, you can park ANY car in front of 100 people, and everyone will find SOMETHING about it they don't like. It is just human nature, and I am as guilty of it as anyone else. I would not say it to the owner, but to myself I might say " I would have done this differently, or I don't like those wheels, or whatever." WE ALL DO IT, and in the final analysis, it is just our opinion, nothing more.

I've looked at some of George Barris' work, and thought it was ugly. But I'm sure ol' George wouldn't give a rat's posterior that I had that opinion........after all, he has sure done more than I ever will. It is just a given that as soon as someone posts a picture on certain forums, and the car is not exactly like they think it should be, the claws come out. I have seen it a zillion times on there, and the reaction is predictable every time.

You just completed a 1,000 mile round trip in a car you built with your own two hands, while most of them (and me included) are sitting on the sidelines, watching. That is quite an accomplishment in itself, and we are proud that one of our RRR guys did it. :D:D:D

AMEN BROTHER DON!!!! :D

Thanks again don, im happy thats why i designed and built it, and your right, i do it myself, but i see no need to keep a thread going about how much i dislike a car, i keep it to myself.

One guy over there even suggested that HRD should be punched for building his car. C'mon folks, grow up. That's way over the top and just ignorant. HRD built his car the way he wanted it and I'm good with that. Not to mention he actually drives the car on long trips to attend shows. I hope he brings it to Daytona again this year so I can get some pics of it. I missed it last year somehow.
