How would you go about making a Boat Tail? One like this would be ideal..

I Have a 38 Buick Trunkback--real rough-something like the shape of this 36. It has a long skinny hood and good doors and frame. I admire an Aurburn boat tail, and wondered if I could chop the top and rear off the Buick and build a boat tail for it and make a Rat/Auburn lookin thing? But the big swoopie compound curve boat tail looks HARD to fab.. Any ideas??

(Its snowin like CRAZY heer--need day dreaming material)

Yeah--I've been looking at Flippers build, and have a top from a 53 Mercury 4 door sedan, and would have the top from the Buick to cut on. I have been squinting my eyes and cocking my head at them till I have a crick in my neck, but cant see a boat tail in there :) ...

Just have to skin them and 1/2 them and stick them together and see what shows up..

I'm no fan of fiberglass, but might have to try it to get that coumpound tapering curve..

Heres a top of a 53 Merc like the one I've been saving for the rear of a Cab or bucket, and a shot of a longtop Buick than might have some possibilites if I split it in half long ways, and cut out the rear window & used the pinched together rear corners as a tapering rear of a boat tail and leave the front wide. Just have to do it and see I guess....

Just throwing this out there. I've seen a hood from an early 40's Ford truck used before.. They have all the correct contours and make a great boat tail.

I think the Merc roof is to squarish on the sides and too flat on top to really give you what you want - might be the picture angle though....

your idea for the Buick roof seems like it would work. If you want the boat tail of that yellow Duesy I think you'd need the roof off of a Fleetline or the like. Come to think of it my Olds front fenders might work split right down the trim ridge....

....you can't have 'em. ;)

Yeah T1--That Ford Hood Do look Good!! (I'm gonna be a rapper :) ) I'll have to keep an eye out for one. I do have a 40s Binder hood, but it lacks the look of the Ford..

Yo SF-- Good lead on the front fenders! I have a couple dinged up ones from my 48 Pontiac that are very similar to your olds'-- Ya think just cut the headlight hole in half and have a big tail light or jet exhaust there??? OOOOH--that sounds weird :) [cl I like weird..

Just a pair of the door section of the front fender might be enough to shape the rest around. It's a separate piece that just bolts to the door.

Oh yeah--I see --the taper of the fender as it goes back towards the rear makes the boat tail. Heres a pic of my Pontiac-the fenders are a little different, but the same general design. I didn't see that. I might have extra of those door pieces too. When the snow melts I'll check.

I was thinking the fender was flipped around with the headlight at the rear with a big hole there where a bullit or something would fill it. I have seen something like that here where someone worked up a Studabaker nose. I was thinking about that for the rear when you mentioned the fenders. Has a P51 Mustang nose look..

Thanks again for the vision. Your idea is better.
