though a little misleading the title is correct--a 1940 ford model 9N tractor...:D

i got this thing about 3 years ago from my uncle in hot springs, and it has been seting in a shed waiting for me to get the time and money to fix it up--well i've found the time anyway:rolleyes:

me and the boys (Dad will be drafted as the chief tech advisor&meachanic:D)
are wanting to have it going by next spring so we can disc up a garden spot for the lil' wifey.....i'll probably eventually get a mower for it, and also hope to use it to drag projects around at the shop...

i'll update the pics & progress if there is any interest,

thanks tripper.....

here's a few more pics gonna piddle a little more on the hood/grille today and then get started on the fenders friday...

notice in one of these pics a shifter coming out the side of the housing, it controls the optional sherman 2 speed auxillary transmision
the hood was flattened in the front, i used an old jack to push it back close to where it goes..

Awesome! [cl

My dad completely restored his 9N (don’t know what year it was) and it turned out great.

Very cool tractor. :D

I’m looking forward to seeing the progress. [P

Restore? Heck we never quit using ours (Dads) around the farm (Dad's farm)! Same with the ol' Oliver Row Cropper. There was always some sort a small job to do with 'em....

no this isn't really a restoration, though these are sweet in "brand new" condition-i'm just making it look&run good enuf that i'm not ashamed of it-yet not too good to actually use

i think these are really the "model A" of agriculture:D and i think alot of the parts are the same!!

worked a little on it today --will update pics tomorrow...

thanks for the comments guys:cool:

Yep....I'm pretty sure they are, too!

My Dad and I saw a two nice ones a couple years back when we were at the Orono Agricultural Fair...Only difference was, these flatheads had eight sparkplugs!!!:cool:

Keep postin' I love those cute old things!

Regards,
Shea:)

Yo HRP--Maybe someone will photoshop it? Bag it 'down in tha weeds', grinder white sidewalls?? Its already got the 'Bigs N Littles'..

At least get one of those PTO overrides--I ran into a lot of fences with those things bushogging till granddad got a bush hog clutch.. Got tired of working on fence.. He upgraded with a Workmaster when I was 14, and retired the flatty to the hog pen with a rolled over 50 Chevy PU--My first 'victum'. (A long story about a one lane bridge, a swimmin hole and a bottle of ripple) I was a wild child, and Granddad was a forgiving soul..

Fun project--brings back the good ole daze.. Never seen the 2 speed OD--Whats the details on it?

I have a 8N. Overhauled it around 15 yrs ago still going strong.Dad always gives me a hard time says "Its just big enough to get you in a bind" or " wont pull itself out of a wet paper sack". Its a great little tractor. You will defenitly want to get a pto slip clutch if mowing, they ont have live pto and it will push you into things.LOL

I used to travel around and buy these old 8 AND 9 N tractors. I'd find them in the weeds after some poor smuck tried to clesar land with it. I'd get em for an average of $400 each, then take them to my shop and either rebuild them or fix what needed to be fixed. If you need any help with ignition or engine, let me know. I have done literally 100's of these tractors. Cool project.

thanks for the comments guys, i am familiar with the "run on" on old tractors like these (my 1st experience was a massey ferguson and a big oak tree:eek:)
i hafta say that this little ford isn't quite the "hoss" that a massey feguson 35 is though, but will be usable i believe....
as far as that lever it operates an optional 2 speed auxillary transmission called a sherman--found this on a tractor page for 8N's, though the info also applies for the most part to the 9 as well..

"Sherman transmissions were offered as a dealer installed option and were available in overdrive (Step-up), underdrive (Step-down) and dual range over/underdrive models. Most singles had a shifter lever on the left side of the transmission, but some were offered with a cable shifter for a short time. Since the cables rusted and froze up easily, they were soon dropped from the Sherman options."

found that on "oldfrodtractors.com" (i don't know how to put that as a link, but if anybody wants to that'd be great)

gastrick, um......i think that one is, ......um..........

OVER THE TOP!!![cl:D

don't think those little ford transmissions would hold up long to a blown flat -8 the duals aren't any help for the trans either.....they are really cool though:cool:

here's a few more pics...

got the tractor moved around into the shop-(dads place)
pulled off the rear fenders, worked on getting the hood ready for primer..(spent about twice as long on bodywork than i had planned:rolleyes:)

will finish & prime the hood & fenders prob monday, then back to real work.....i'll tell ya more about that later

thanks gastrick--and don't think for a minute a v-8 hasn't been considered as a replacement if my block is ruined.....;)
only problem is that this was supposed to be a fun and budget friendly project, and a quick one at that......

the "rest of the story".......i know where a rebuilt 52 flatty is that could be purchased for about $800...(wasn't planning on but about 1/2 that in whole project:eek:)..but then you have to have the adapt-a-kit and then.....and then.....you know how it is....
